Summary

After a failed attempt in the Qt "Create or Recover Wallet" dialog, a wallet restore could rescan from the wrong block, or not rescan at all.

Recover::askRecover soft-set -wcdate, -mnemonic and -newwallet before every check had passed, and SoftSetArg never overwrites a value. So when a check sent the user back to the dialog, the failed attempt's values stuck:

  • An earlier date on retry was ignored. The first attempt's wallet creation date won, so the restore scan could start too late and miss transactions. Each retry also wrote the date minus one day back into the date field, so the date shown moved a day earlier every time.
  • Create new, then "Passphrases don't match", then Recover left -newwallet=1. ScanForWalletTransactions then returned early, so the restored wallet was never scanned and showed an empty balance.
  • A valid seed with mismatched passphrases, then Create new kept -mnemonic. The "new" wallet was built from that seed and never scanned.

askRecover now runs every check first and sets the args in one place afterwards. The scan date (one day before the picked date) goes straight into -wcdate and is no longer written back into the date field.

-wcdate also stayed set for the rest of the session. Every later ScanForWalletTransactions call (importaddress, importpubkey, importmulti, the BIP47 rescan) therefore started at the restore date instead of its own start block. CreateWalletFromFile now clears it after the initial scan.

Related: #2011 does the same for -newwallet and -rescan. The two PRs change different args. They touch neighbouring lines in CreateWalletFromFile but merge cleanly in either order.

Test plan

  • New WalletUiTests::recoveryRetryUsesFinalInput drives the dialog through a failed attempt (either creating a wallet or recovering from a later date), then a recover from an earlier date. It passes with the fix and fails on the old code: -newwallet stays set, and -wcdate is 14-06-2021 instead of 09-03-2020.
  • Regtest: restore with -mnemonic and -wcdate=01-06-2020, mine 250 blocks dated 2020-01-01 and 20 dated 2021-06-01, then run importaddress <script> "" true. Before the fix it logs Rescanning last 270 blocks (from block 51); after, (from block 0).
  • Release build with GUI and tests (Ubuntu 26.04 under WSL, depends toolchain) and ctest: everything passes except WalletUiTests::themeTintColors. That test fails the same way on master in this environment (swatch palette #efefef instead of #fbeef0).

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Recover::askRecover soft-set -wcdate, -mnemonic and -newwallet before
every check had passed. SoftSetArg never overwrites a value, so when a
check sent the user back to the dialog, the failed attempt's values
stuck. A retry with an earlier wallet creation date kept the first
date, so the restore scan could start too late and miss transactions,
and each retry moved the date shown in the dialog a day earlier.
Create new, then "Passphrases don't match", then Recover left
-newwallet=1, so the restored wallet was never scanned. A valid seed
with mismatched passphrases, then Create new, built the "new" wallet
from that seed without scanning it.

Run every check first and set the args in one place afterwards. Compute
the scan date (one day before the picked date) straight into -wcdate
instead of writing it back to the date field.

-wcdate also stayed set for the rest of the session, so every later
ScanForWalletTransactions (importaddress, importpubkey, importmulti,
the BIP47 rescan) started at the restore date instead of its own start
block. Clear it in CreateWalletFromFile after the initial scan.

Tests: add WalletUiTests::recoveryRetryUsesFinalInput, which fails on
the old askRecover whether the failed attempt creates or recovers.

Review in Change Stack →

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved wallet recovery retries by preserving the final valid mnemonic, passphrase, and recovery date.
    • Prevented failed recovery attempts from changing the selected recovery date.
    • Ensured recovery scans use the selected date correctly and do not reuse it for later rescans.
    • Improved handling of new-wallet recovery options and optional mnemonic passphrases.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for recovery retries, date handling, passphrase validation, and mnemonic preservation.

Walkthrough

Recovery arguments are now applied after input validation. Wallet initialization clears the restore date after the initial scan. A UI test covers recovery retries with updated input.

CodeAnt-AI Description

Use the final recovery choices and correct scan dates

What Changed

  • Failed attempts no longer carry an earlier wallet choice or recovery seed into the next attempt; the accepted attempt uses the user’s final choices.
  • Recovery scans start one day before the selected date without changing the date shown in the dialog.
  • Later transaction imports and rescans use their own scan start dates instead of the wallet recovery date.

Impact

✅ Recovery retries use the final seed and wallet choice
✅ Earlier recovery dates are honored
✅ Later imports and rescans start at the correct date

CodeAnt PR Risk: Low Risk

  • The PR appears safe to merge; recovery arguments are now set only after all input checks pass.
  • The retry test checks that failed attempts do not leak wallet-creation or recovery-date values into the accepted restore.
  • The selected date remains unchanged in the dialog, while the scan date is set to the preceding day and cleared after wallet creation.

Clear -newwallet after the initial wallet scan.

ScanForWalletTransactions returns before scanning when GetBoolArg("-newwallet", false) is true. CreateWalletFromFile leaves this flag set after the initial scan, so later rescans in the same session can be skipped.

Valid issue, but it's handled in #2011, which clears -newwallet (and -rescan) at this same spot after the startup scan. This PR keeps to -wcdate and the dialog checks so the two PRs don't overlap.

@reubenyap Thanks for clarifying the scope. The -newwallet and -rescan cleanup belongs to #2011. No duplicate change is needed in #2015.

The underlying finding is valid, so I am not marking it as fixed or invalid here.
