perf(dpa4c): accelerate compressed DPA4C CUDA inference in LAMMPS - #6110
This PR speeds up compressed DPA4C models in LAMMPS on CUDA (pt-expt backend, pair_style deepmd/kk and dpa4spin/kk). It rebuilds the inference path from the Kokkos graph build to the force epilogue, derives its launch choices for the Tesla V100, L20 and H20 as well as the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell it was developed on, and extends the compact canonical schema to multi-task branches with a shared fitting network and to graphs whose node count exceeds the 32-bit index range.
The fp32 contract of the model is kept throughout. Every change either leaves every output unchanged bit for bit, or reorders a floating-point sum by design and is checked against the uncompressed model in fp32 and fp64. No reduced-precision arithmetic (TF32, bf16, fp16, split precision) is used. Forces are now assembled in 64-bit fixed point, so they no longer depend on the scheduling order and runs are reproducible.
Measured speedups
All timings are LAMMPS step times against the parent build with the same frozen models; each commit message gives the conditions and the number of runs per point.

Per-GPU tuning, change of the step at 10,296 / 100,800 atoms of diamond carbon relative to the sm_120-tuned build:
V100: Nano -21.0 / -25.9%, Mini -25.2 / -36.8%, Air -4.9 / -6.1%; native-spin Nano -21.5 / -24.6%
L20: Nano -3.8 / -0.0%; the other grades within 0.3%
Where the freeze-time measurement departs from the rules, the step takes up to 11% less time again (Neo at 6,160 atoms on the L20: -11.2%; Plus at 720 atoms on the H20: -9.3%).
A frozen branch of a multi-task DPA4C with a shared fitting network now reaches the fused path: the OMat24 branch of the two-branch OpenLAM DPA4C Mini takes 0.151 / 0.449 / 2.905 ms per step on diamond carbon at 512 / 10,296 / 100,800 atoms, against 1.133 / 1.504 / 10.19 ms before (3.1-7.7x, similar on B/C/N).
Several ranks without a GPU-aware MPI: on three RTX PRO 6000 GPUs, Nano at one million atoms takes 6.8 ms per step with a CUDA-aware Open MPI, 11.3 ms with MPICH and the device fold of this PR, and 13.8 ms with the host path of LAMMPS, against 15.2 ms on one GPU.

perf(dpa4c): accelerate compressed DPA4C inference on CUDA in LAMMPS (the core)
Kokkos graph build: one pass fills every row of the compact canonical graph (cp.async staging of the neighbor lists, fixed-point squared-distance keys, warp sorts, decoupled look-back for the output offsets). The edge storage is sized by the candidate count, so the edge count never leaves the device and the per-step readback and synchronization disappear.
Model replay: the evaluation of a graph without halo nodes is captured once into a CUDA graph and replayed, keyed by the addresses and extents of its inputs. A per-instance mutex serializes the runs of a model, a failed capture turns capturing off for that model, and a step that requests the per-atom virial evaluates eagerly.
Fused energy-force operator: prologue and epilogue kernels derive the ownership mask, frame offsets and segment sums inside the operator; the edge backward assembles the force directly in 64-bit fixed point (2^-32 eV/A); a frame with a non-finite energy or virial or an out-of-range force contribution reports NaN forces.
Edge scans: rows of small systems are shared among 2, 4 or 8 warps; wide profiles co-schedule 16-24 rows per block in lockstep windows of bond length; one node type takes folded scans, two to eight types take slotted scans with 4 or 8 per-type slots; a low-rank radial table is adopted at compression only where it reproduces every channel and its radial derivative at the knots to 1e-8; bond vectors are prefetched into L2. Generated shards (shard.cu.in) replace graph_compress_c*.cu.
Fused fitting network: one kernel carries a node panel through every hidden layer, the energy head and the input-gradient backward, bitwise equal to the per-layer kernels; small runs split a panel over a thread-block cluster.
perf(dpa4c): tune compressed DPA4C CUDA inference for V100, L20 and H20
The fitting route follows the fp32 ridge (peak FLOP rate over DRAM bandwidth) and the compute capability of the device. Freezing or compressing for a CUDA device times the fused shapes against the per-layer kernels with CUDA-graph replays and stores the departures from the rules with a fingerprint of the device; another device takes the rules. The measurement adds 15 s to 3 min to a freeze, and every route gives the same outputs bit for bit.
sm_70 register budgets; every launch choice follows from the device and the system, without environment overrides.
Without a GPU-aware MPI, deepmd/kk and dpa4spin/kk pack the ghost values on the device and stage only those through pinned host buffers, bit for bit as the host path.
dpmodel: integer indices are bounded with maximum instead of clip, which array_api_compat < 1.14 lowers to isnan on integers, an operation AOTInductor cannot compile.
perf(dpa4c): deploy the per-GPU tuning on V100, L20 and H20
The route measurement holds on boards at their power limit: bursts and long single-route trains, over samples of one and of several node types, and a route departs from the rules only where it wins both.
The shared Inductor options give kernels separate output buffers, which avoids a Triton 3.7.1 race in in-place reductions under warp replication.
The RUNPATH of the LAMMPS plugin also holds $ORIGIN/.., so LAMMPS_PLUGIN_PATH alone loads it.
Documentation: pair_style dpa4spin and its Kokkos variant in the LAMMPS command reference, when compression keeps a fitting kernel other than the default, and the CUDA support of Open MPI for runs on several GPUs only (it lengthens a small single-rank step by 10-18%).
perf(pt_expt): fold the case embedding of a shared fitting network at export
The constant one-hot case embedding of a deployed branch is folded into the bias of the first fitting layer, so the export, the launch tuners and the fused operators see a plain fitting network while model.json keeps the branch as trained. A first layer whose residual carries the case embedding past the activation keeps it, with a warning.
feat(pt-expt): support automatic-width canonical graph indices
Source indices are 32- or 64-bit by the node extent, while edge counts, CSR offsets and source-grouped edge positions stay int64. A byte-word carrier lets one exported canonical artifact accept either width without copying; the Kokkos producer gains 64-bit edge prefixes and source CSR.
Interfaces and compatibility
Compressed DPA4C .pt2 archives must be re-frozen: the schema of the fused operator and the source-word ABI of canonical artifacts changed. DPA4 archives keep loading.
C API version 31: DP_DPA4ComputeCanonicalGraphGPU and DP_DPA4SpinComputeCanonicalGraphGPU replace DP_DeepPotComputeCanonicalGraphGPU and DP_DeepSpinComputeCanonicalGraphGPU of versions 28 to 30, and take the graph virial, the caller's stream, the node positions and the MPI communicator. The new names are deliberate: a binary built against an earlier version fails to load instead of calling a function of another signature.
The backend plugin interface is version 2 (deepmd_create_deeppot_backend_v2, deepmd_create_deepspin_backend_v2); a version-1 plugin is refused at load. Binaries and plugins built against C API version 30 or backend interface version 1 must be rebuilt.
DP_DeepPotHasLongRange, DP_DeepPotModelDeviHasLongRange and has_long_range() on DeepPot and DeepPotModelDevi, together with the node-position and communicator arguments above, are the interface of a long-range module that a follow-up PR adds. No model in this PR has a long-range module, so these paths are inactive here; carrying them now avoids a second version bump of the C API and the plugin interface.
Validation on this branch
The branch is based on master 1ded5d2 and holds the five commits cherry-picked from the development branch. Against the commits validated there, the rebase changes no file under source/api_c, source/api_cc, source/lib, source/lmp or source/op.
One semantic conflict with feat(ase): freeze checkpoints and reuse neighbor searches #6085: its new test test_compact_canonical_deep_eval asserted the former uint32 source carrier. The last commit updates it to the byte-word carrier (uint8 with a word axis of 4 for a small graph) and the int64 source_order; the test failed before the update and passes after it.
pre-commit over the whole range: all hooks passed.
Local run on an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell (PyTorch 2.13.0+cu130, CUDA 13.3): source/tests/pt_expt/descriptor 1611 passed and 81 skipped (the skips need the CPU operators or DEEPMD_ENABLE_DPA1_HIGH_LMAX=ON, which this build did not compile), apart from the test above. The other Python suites, the C++ suites and the LAMMPS tests were not rerun locally for this branch and are left to CI, including the Test CUDA jobs.
The validation records in the commit messages (pytest and C++ suites, bitwise LAMMPS comparisons, fp64 accuracy checks, multi-rank runs) describe the development branch.

A compressed DPA4C model in LAMMPS (pt-expt backend, Kokkos) spent its
step in latency-bound edge scans, a fitting network of one kernel per
layer, a graph build that read the edge count back to the host every
step, and the host launches around them. This commit rebuilds that path
from the LAMMPS graph build to the force epilogue, under the fp32
contract of the model: every change either keeps every output bit for
bit, or reorders a floating-point sum by design and is judged against
the uncompressed model in fp32 and fp64. No reduced-precision
arithmetic (TF32, bf16, fp16, split precision) is used.
Measured on an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell (sm_120) against the parent
commit, both builds on the public LAMMPS patch_4Jul2026 in plugin mode
for the plain models (medians of 12 runs per point) and on the OutisLi
fork for native spin (medians of six), as the ratio of the step times at
512 / 10,296 / 100,800 atoms of the five v20260911 grades
(Nano to Plus):
- diamond carbon: 3.5-4.9x / 2.5-2.9x / 2.0-2.9x
- B, C and N at random on the same sites: 3.5-5.1x / 2.4-2.7x / 1.9-2.6x
- five elements at random (frozen geometry): 2.5-3.5x at 10,296 and
1.9-2.7x at 100,800 atoms
- native spin, Newtonian NVE on the OutisLi fork: 3.5-5.3x / 2.3-2.7x /
1.8-2.8x
The largest system that one device runs grows from 14.05 to 22.43
million atoms, and the throughput above one million atoms by 2.6-3.0x.
Graph build (source/lmp)
- One pass fills every row of the compact canonical graph: blocks of
eight centers stage their neighbor lists with cp.async (whole 128-byte
lines into L2), key the candidates by fixed-point squared distance,
sort each row in a warp in the lane-major layout, and take their
output offsets from a decoupled look-back. Positions are packed as
fixed-point integers once per step, so the row order is a function of
the positions and atom tags alone; lists of up to twelve candidates
per lane take a kernel of their own. The fill at 100,800 atoms takes
0.31 ms against 0.47 ms.
- Without a source CSR, edges go to storage sized by the candidate count
(bounded by 1/64 of the device memory), so the edge count never leaves
the device and the per-step readback and its synchronization go away.
A caller that declines the per-atom virial passes two-entry source-CSR
placeholders, and the per-atom virial is then zero.
Model replay and the C/C++ interface (source/api_cc, source/api_c)
- The evaluation of a graph without halo nodes is captured once into a
CUDA graph and replayed, keyed by the addresses and extents of its
inputs; tensors over the caller's buffers are built inside the
captured evaluation. A per-instance mutex serializes the runs of a
model, a process-wide lock orders the operations that wait for the
whole device, a failed capture turns capturing off for that model, a
charge state rebuilds the frozen tables in place, and a step that
requests the per-atom virial evaluates eagerly.
- C API version 31: DP_DPA4ComputeCanonicalGraphGPU and
DP_DPA4SpinComputeCanonicalGraphGPU take the virial of the graph and
the caller's stream. They replace DP_DeepPotComputeCanonicalGraphGPU
and DP_DeepSpinComputeCanonicalGraphGPU of versions 28 to 30, whose
argument lists differ, under other names, so a binary built against
an earlier version fails to load instead of calling a function of
another signature. The C++ wrappers carry the one signature.
- The backend interface carries the virial and the stream, so the
DeepPot and DeepSpin plugin entry points are exported as version 2
(deepmd_create_deeppot_backend_v2); a version-1 plugin is refused at
load.
Fused energy-force operator (source/op/pt/dpa4c)
- One prologue and one epilogue kernel derive the ownership mask, frame
offsets, segment sums and dtype conversions inside the operator.
- The edge backward assembles the force directly in 64-bit fixed point
(2^-32 eV/A, four words per atom), so the force is independent of the
scheduling order and reproducible. The magnetic force of a native-spin
model closes inside the operator as well. A frame whose energy or
virial is not finite, or with a force contribution of 2^30 eV/A or
more or a magnetic contribution of 2^30 or more, reports its forces
and magnetic forces as NaN.
Edge scans (graph_compress_kernel.cuh, graph_compress_launch.h)
- Rows of a small system are shared among 2, 4 or 8 warps (the largest
split whose warps fit one wave of the resident warps of the scan).
- The wide profiles co-schedule 16, 20 or 24 rows per block and walk
them in lockstep windows of 4 A of bond length, so the rows of a block
read the same region of the radial table at the same time.
- A system of one node type takes folded scans that apply the pair
coefficients once per row.
- A system of two to eight node types takes slotted scans: the features
that a pair coefficient multiplies are accumulated per source type in
slots and multiplied once per row. Kernels of four slots serve two to
four types and kernels of eight slots five to eight; the device
selects the serving kernel from a bitmap of the node types, and the
others end through a predicated PTX exit that leaves the code of the
pairwise and single-type scans unchanged.
- A low-rank radial table expands the scalar-only channels into 32
basis functions, adopted at compression only where they reproduce
every channel and its radial derivative at the knots to 1e-8.
- Bond vectors, and for slotted scans the source indices, are
prefetched into L2 when they exceed it; a bridged model bounds its
window test per row.
- Generated shards (shard.cu.in) compile one translation unit per
degree of 64 and 128 channels and one per narrower width, replacing
graph_compress_c*.cu.
Fused fitting network (source/op/pt/graph_fitting.cu)
- One kernel carries a node panel through every hidden layer, the
energy head and the input-gradient backward, with weights streamed
through a cp.async ring. Contractions and residuals keep the order and
rounding of the per-layer kernels, so energy and descriptor cotangent
are bitwise those of the per-layer path. A small run splits each panel
over a thread-block cluster, and the panel shape follows the device
occupancy.
Launch choices
- Every launch choice is derived from device properties or from the
system, and can be overridden for tuning on other devices:
DP_DPA4C_ROW_SPLIT, DP_DPA4C_COSCHEDULE, DP_DPA4C_BOND_PREFETCH,
DP_DPA4C_NODE_LANES, DP_DPA4C_TYPE_SLOTS and DP_FITTING_FUSED
(source/op/pt/launch_overrides.h).
Python (deepmd/pt_expt)
- The compression builds the low-rank table; a serialized payload
without it restores the direct table.
- The compact canonical lower folds weight-only expressions at run time
after constant updates, and its source CSR takes extents of its own so
that the placeholders trace.
- The energy model passes the placeholders when the per-atom virial is
not requested, and takes the ownership mask from the fused operator.
- The CPU reference of the descriptor backward returns the magnetic
cotangent split as the CUDA operator returns it, the on-site part per
node and the neighbor part per edge, which every caller reduces onto
the source nodes; the CPU reference of the fused operator checks each
per-edge part against the fixed-point range, and returns zero totals
for an empty node axis.
Compatibility
- Compressed DPA4C .pt2 archives are re-frozen: the schema of the fused
operator changed. DPA4 archives keep loading.
- Binaries and plugins built against C API version 30 or backend
interface version 1 must be rebuilt.
Validation
- pytest: CUDA descriptor suite 862 passed (default and with
DP_DPA4C_TYPE_SLOTS=0), CPU 50, DPA1 59, model, freeze and
serialization 168; C++ API 580 and C API 95 passed. The slotted-scan
tests raise the mode mixing of their descriptors to order one, and a
negative control shows that a mixing of another source type or mode
exceeds the tolerances 69 to 4,300 times.
- Outputs of the random-weight grades at three sizes and LAMMPS
per-atom energies and forces of the trained grades on carbon, BCN and
five elements are bitwise identical to the validated build wherever a
change keeps the summation order; two MPI ranks reproduce one rank bit
for bit at 10,296 atoms.
- Against fp64, the force RMS error of the compressed path is 2.2e-6 to
2.9e-6 eV/A at 0.05 A jitter, against 8.9e-6 to 1.0e-5 for the
uncompressed fp32 model; the slotted scans match the pairwise ones
within 4%.
The compressed DPA4C path was tuned on an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell
(sm_120). This commit derives its launch choices for the Tesla V100
(sm_70), the L20 (sm_89) and the H20 (sm_90) from device properties,
measures at freeze time the one choice that the properties cannot
decide, and folds the ghost outputs on the device for several ranks
without GPU-aware MPI. Outputs are unchanged bit for bit, except at 512
atoms, where the row split follows the residency of the new register
budgets.
Measured with LAMMPS against the previous build (medians of six runs,
the same frozen models), as the change of the step at 10,296 / 100,800
atoms of diamond carbon:
- V100: Nano -21.0 / -25.9%, Mini -25.2 / -36.8%, Air -4.9 / -6.1%;
native-spin Nano -21.5 / -24.6%
- H20: Nano -3.2 / -3.9%, Neo -5.1 / -2.5%, Air -3.7 / -1.5%;
native-spin Neo -8.2 / -4.3%
- L20: Nano -3.8 / -0.0%; the other grades within 0.3%
Where the freeze-time measurement departs from the rules, the step
takes up to 11% less time, for example Neo at 6,160 atoms on the L20
(-11.2%) and Plus at 720 atoms on the H20 (-9.3%).
Fitting network (source/op/pt)
- Widths 256 and 384 take the fused throughput shape only on devices
whose fp32 ridge (peak FLOP rate over DRAM bandwidth) reaches a
quarter of the width; elsewhere the per-layer kernels stream the
weights faster. Width 96 takes the 64-node panels where they need
fewer waves than the 32-node panels.
- Compute capability 7.0 runs the throughput shapes, whose co-resident
panels hide the synchronous weight copies of that architecture; the
latency shapes, which run one panel per multiprocessor, need 8.0. A
shape is served only if its dynamic shared memory fits the opt-in
limit of the device.
- Freezing or compressing for a CUDA device times the fused shapes
against the per-layer kernels in bands of run sizes bounded by wave
counts, with replays of captured CUDA graphs on periodic bulk systems
at the cutoff of the model, and stores the departures from the rules
with a fingerprint of the device in the operator call. A band departs
only if its gain exceeds 1% and half the spread of its captures, and
another device takes the rules. The measurement adds 15 s to 3 min to
a freeze. Every route gives the same outputs bit for bit.
Edge kernels (source/op/pt/dpa4c)
- sm_70 has register budgets of its own. The default budgets, measured
on sm_90, give the 8-channel backward 24 blocks per multiprocessor and
the degree-two spin backward the register count of the compiler.
- Every launch choice follows from the device and the system. The DP_*
launch overrides are removed; the tests reach each variant through the
system size, the number of types and the edge storage.
dpmodel
- Integer indices are bounded with maximum instead of clip, which
array_api_compat < 1.14 lowers to isnan on integers, an operation that
AOTInductor cannot compile.
LAMMPS (source/lmp)
- Where LAMMPS would pass the reverse communication of a pair style
through host memory (MPI without GPU-aware support, or the classic and
host communication settings), deepmd/kk and dpa4spin/kk pack the ghost
values on the device, stage only those through pinned host buffers and
add them on the device, bit for bit as the host path. On three RTX PRO
6000 GPUs, Nano at one million atoms takes 6.8 ms per step with a
CUDA-aware Open MPI, 11.3 ms with MPICH and the device fold and
13.8 ms with the host path of LAMMPS, against 15.2 ms on one GPU.
- The two-rank Kokkos regression of dpa4spin/kk also compares the
per-atom centroid virial, in runs after those without it.
Long-range models (source/api_c, source/api_cc)
- DP_DPA4ComputeCanonicalGraphGPU of C API version 31 also takes the
node positions and the MPI communicator of the caller, and DeepPot and
DeepPotModelDevi report has_long_range(). A long-range model given a
communicator is never replayed from a captured graph, and pair_style
deepmd rejects periodic boundaries for it.
Documentation
- The LAMMPS installation guide describes a CUDA-aware MPI for runs on
several GPUs, the conda-forge Open MPI with UCX built into LAMMPS and
the C++ interface, and the installation skill follows it and checks a
plugin-mode build with `plugin list`.
The deployment of the tuned compressed DPA4C path on the three GPUs
found three defects, which this commit fixes; it also adds the
documentation that the deployment needs.
The freeze-time measurement of the fitting routes timed the compared
routes in alternating short bursts, at the clocks of a lightly loaded
board. A board at its power limit, however, clocks a route by the power
that the route itself draws. On an NVIDIA L20 at its 350 W limit, the
per-layer kernels of a native-spin Neo model at 100,800 nodes run at
1,830 MHz where they run alone and the fused shape of the rules at
2,295 MHz: the per-layer kernels were 4% to 5% faster in the bursts and
9% slower on their own, and the measured table lengthened the LAMMPS
step by 10% at 100,800 atoms and by 3% at 23,040. The bursts, and trains
of one route at a time timed after at least 500 ms of device time of
their own replays, approximate the two ends of a deployment, whose
LAMMPS step leaves the device idle between the evaluations of the
operator at small and medium systems and keeps it busy at large ones: on
a V100 at its 300 W limit the per-layer kernels of a trained Mini model
at 10,296 nodes are 2.6% faster in the bursts, 0.9% faster on trains and
2.0% faster on trains that leave a fifth of the device time idle, and
the LAMMPS step at that size, which leaves the device idle 12% to 14% of
the time, is 1.9% to 2.8% longer on the route of the rules. Under the
power limit the node types of the system also decide, because the
descriptor runs the single-type scans for one type and the slotted or
pairwise scans for several: on the L20 the per-layer kernels of a
native-spin Air model at 129,536 and 131,072 nodes lose 3% to 7% on
trains of one node type, 2% to 4% on trains of two and at most about 1%
on trains of three, and those of a trained Air model at 12,320 nodes
gain 1.1% with every node carbon and lose 1.4% with three types. A route
other than that of the rules now takes a run size only where it wins the
bursts by its bound, the tie of 1% or the half-range of its gains
between captures, and loses by no more than the tie on trains both with
every node of one type and with the node types of the sample: gains on
trains as small as those of the V100 lie within the scatter of the
captures, while the losses of a board at its power limit reach 3% to 12%
on the L20. Every route that wins the bursts is a candidate, the
candidates are checked on trains in the order of their gains, and a
sample takes further captures, up to seven, until every route lies clear
of its bound.
Triton 3.7.1 can compute a reduction wrongly when an Inductor kernel
stores its result over an input that it loads in the same loop and the
tuned configuration replicates the block across warps: only the first
copy stores, and no barrier separates the loads of the other copies from
that store. The shared Inductor options therefore give the kernels
separate output buffers; the training step of DPA4 takes 0.3% longer and
that of DPA4C stays within its run-to-run spread. Frozen archives take
the same options: with archives frozen under them, the LAMMPS steps of
the benchmark on an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell are as fast as before the
change at all 60 points, and a compressed native-spin archive frozen
both ways gives bit-identical outputs.
LAMMPS opens the plugin through its link in lib/deepmd_lmp, where
$ORIGIN names that directory, so the RUNPATH of the plugin also holds
$ORIGIN/.., which reaches the DeePMD-kit libraries installed beside it,
and LAMMPS_PLUGIN_PATH alone loads the plugin.
The LAMMPS command reference documents pair_style dpa4spin and its
Kokkos variant: the keywords charge_spin and magnetic_force, the
precession and Cartesian conventions of the magnetic force and the
declaration of the selected convention through Pair::extract, the
virials and the restrictions, which the spin section of the DPA4C model
page and the NiO example repeat. The model page also states when
compression keeps a fitting kernel other than the default and what the
measurement adds to its time. The install page enables the CUDA support
of Open MPI on the launch of a run on several GPUs only: the support
adds a memory-type query to every MPI call, which lengthens the
single-rank step of a small system by 10% to 18% on an
RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell.
… export
A branch of a multi-task model whose branches share the fitting network
appends a one-hot case embedding to the descriptor at the input of the
fitting network. The fused fitting operator does not read it, so
fitting_eligible refused such a network, and with it the compressed
energy-force pipeline and the compact canonical schema: a frozen branch
of a DPA4C model exported to the generic graph lower with the reference
fitting network.
The case embedding is a constant of a deployed branch, so its product
with the rows of the first-layer weight that read it is a constant of
the pre-activation. GeneralFitting.fold_case_embedding adds that product
to the bias of the first layer of every network and removes the rows,
which yields a plain fitting network with the same outputs; it clears
the residual flag of the layer, which was inactive at the original input
width and could otherwise become active at the narrower one. A first
layer whose residual adds its input to its output carries the case
embedding past the activation and keeps it, which the export reports
with a warning. The export folds the case embedding of every fitting
both in the model from which it selects the export schema and in the
model it traces, so the schema selection, the launch tuners and the
fused operators see the plain network, while model.json keeps the branch
as trained. The fold does not depend on the descriptor; compressed DPA1
branches with a shared fitting network also reach their compact
canonical schema.
The two-branch DPA4C Mini of OpenLAM (OMat24 and OMol25 branches, eight
case columns, the vacuum reference and the frame charge state), frozen
per branch with --head and --compress, takes the compact canonical
schema and matches its checkpoint on OMat24 and OMolOpoly validation
frames to 4.4e-7 eV/atom in the energy and 1.6e-5 eV/Angstrom in the
forces. In LAMMPS on an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell, its OMat24 branch takes
0.151, 0.449 and 2.905 ms per step on diamond carbon at 512, 10,296 and
100,800 atoms and 0.152, 0.529 and 3.587 ms on a boron-carbon-nitrogen
system, against 1.133, 1.504 and 10.19 ms and 1.174, 1.644 and 11.39 ms
before, a factor of 3.1 to 7.7. A branch of the trained single-task Mini
with zero-weight case columns gives LAMMPS dumps bitwise identical to
those of the single-task archive and the same step time within the
spread of two freezes of one model.
Select 32- or 64-bit source indices from the node extent while keeping
edge counts, CSR offsets and source-grouped edge positions in int64.
Use a dynamic byte-word carrier so one exported canonical artifact can
accept either width without copying index storage.
Carry the source width through the native interfaces and CUDA replay
keys. Extend the Kokkos producer to 64-bit edge prefixes and source CSR,
cache candidate bounds until neighbor rebuild, and retain one explicit
edge-vector path. Update DPA1 and DPA4C consumers and regression coverage.
Canonical artifacts require refreezing for the dynamic source-word ABI.

The compact canonical wrapper of the fused DPA4C operator looked up the
measured fitting-route table itself when it was given none, while the
route measurement times that wrapper, so the two modules imported each
other. The DPA4C descriptor imported the measurement module only to
register its freeze-time tuner.
The energy model, which traces the compact canonical lower, passes the
measured table to the wrapper, and its import of the lookup registers
the tuner; the wrapper takes the rules of the operator when it is given
no table. The dependency runs one way, from the energy model through the
measurement to the wrapper, and the exported programs carry the same
table literals.
This rebuilds the compressed DPA4C CUDA inference path that the LAMMPS Kokkos styles call: a single-pass compact canonical graph build, CUDA-graph replay of the graph-free evaluation, fused prologue/epilogue kernels with 64-bit fixed-point force assembly, edge-scan variants and a fused multi-layer fitting kernel, per-GPU route tuning, device-side ghost packing for MPI without GPU-aware support, export-time folding of a constant case embedding, and automatic-width canonical source indices. The numerical paths I could check are self-consistent: the index-width thresholds agree across the Python and C++ boundaries, the case-embedding fold reads the trailing weight rows and refuses width-changing residuals, the in-place charge-state update matches the existing Python reference, and the low-rank radial table is an optional compression buffer that keeps older payloads loadable.
One finding: the global LAMMPS virial that this change now fills from the model's graph virial is never asserted, while the Kokkos regression compares forces, per-atom virial and energy only. It is filed inline.
The Kokkos regression of dpa4spin compared forces, magnetic forces,
energies and the per-atom virial, but not the global virial, which the
Kokkos pair maps from the nine components of the graph virial onto the
six of LAMMPS and scales. Every snapshot now records the global pair
virial from a pressure compute restricted to the pair, so the existing
comparisons check it against the host pair, between one and two ranks,
under a scaled pair and in an overlay of two pairs; a snapshot that
carries the per-atom virial also sums to its global virial.
❌ Patch coverage is 26.41997% with 855 lines in your changes missing coverage. Please review.
✅ Project coverage is 77.80%. Comparing base (1ded5d2) to head (1293cef).
The earlier inline finding is addressed: the new commit reads the pair-restricted pressure compute into a global_virial snapshot, compares it against the host path through the existing snapshot machinery, and cross-checks the six global components against the sum of the per-atom virial, so the global-virial path now has an assertion that can fail.
On the new head I re-ran the full review. The claims that changed or appeared with the new commits hold up on inspection: the fitting-route tuner's level-0 registration is deliberate and its table is consumed by level-0 canonical artifacts; the fp64 force/virial of the compact canonical lower are documented and every C++ consumer casts to the caller's VALUETYPE; the relaxed source-CSR validation is paired with N + 1 checks in the operators that read it, and the two-entry placeholder is injected only on the DPA4C branch; the replaced DeepPotBackend/DeepSpinBackend virtual is covered by the version-2 plugin symbol gate; and the new compression payload entries are optional with backward compatibility in both readers.
Remaining observations are non-blocking and need no change for this PR: no test drives pair_style deepmd/kk, so the non-spin device path this change rewrites has no runtime regression; the CUDA-graph capture-failure fallback and the per-tensor copy branch above 8192 nodes are unexercised; there is still no DPA1 compact-canonical fixture at the C++ device entry; the re-freeze rejection and the new validator rejection branches have no negative test; the 8-byte index carrier is never fed end-to-end; the removed hidden-width cap is not covered above 4096; the freeze-time tuning is untested for native-spin and bridged models, as is the case-embedding keep branch through export; and two docstrings could be tightened (copy_results calls the small-graph branch a one-dtype copy although the DPA1 caller passes a mixed list that degrades to per-tensor copies, and the low-rank module summary omits that the radial derivative is part of the adoption criterion).

Reviewed all 103 changed files, including Python export/compression and route selection, canonical index/schema boundaries, CUDA operators and generated shards, C/C++ ABI and plugin loading, Kokkos graph construction and MPI ghost folding, documentation, and regression-test integration. The latest global-virial test delta and existing resolved review threads were rechecked. I found no unresolved actionable source defect.
Validation: 81 focused local CPU tests passed (4 skipped), plus public C11/C++11 header checks. The current-head C++ CUDA job passed: native CTest 4/4, all six dedicated native-spin Kokkos/MPI cases, general LAMMPS 296 passed/24 skipped, and IPI 8 passed. CPU Python/C++ workflows also passed.
The full Python CUDA job in run 40638993765 is still running at submission; this approval is the source-review judgment, not a claim that all CI is complete. I did not independently reproduce the performance benchmarks, huge-index allocations, or GPU race-sanitizer coverage. Required checks and merge policy remain unchanged.
…onkeypatch
Under pytest 9.2, monkeypatch.setattr takes the value to restore from the
instance __dict__ of its target when no data descriptor serves the
attribute. torch.backends.cuda.matmul serves allow_tf32 through
__getattr__, so the patch records it as absent and its teardown deletes
it, which raises AttributeError after every case of
test_cold_compiled_force_backward. A fixture disables TF32 in cuBLAS and
cuDNN and restores both flags through their own attributes.

The new TF32 fixture addresses the previous CUDA job's three pytest teardown errors without changing production code. It restores cuBLAS/cuDNN flags through their setters instead of asking pytest to delete a dynamically served attribute. I exercised the exact fixture AST with pytest 9.2 and local CPU PyTorch across all four initial flag combinations and passing, skipped, and intentionally failing test bodies; all 12 independent teardown records restored both original values. The test file also parses cleanly.
CI qualification remains separate: the previous head's C++ CUDA job passed, while its Python CUDA run ended with 15,232 passed / 8,713 skipped / these 3 teardown errors. On this head the CUDA test jobs are currently skipped, and other workflows are queued/running; this is not a claim of a fresh full GPU pass. No new actionable source defect found.
…eepmodeling#6116)
## Summary
This PR adds a latent-charge long-range module to pt_expt models with a
DPA4C descriptor. A charge network reads the descriptor that the energy
fitting reads and predicts per-atom latent charges, and every pair of
atoms interacts through them:
```math
E = \sum_i E_i^{\text{SR}} + k_e \sum_{i<j} \sum_{c=1}^{C} q_i^c q_j^c\, K(r_{ij}),
```
with the LES kernel erf(αr)/r (the default) or a sum of Gaussians (SOG).
Non-periodic systems take the direct sum over the pairs of a frame.
Periodic systems, with `periodic: true`, take the sum over the images of
the cell in reciprocal space, by smooth particle-mesh Ewald (SPME) by
default or over explicit wave numbers. An optional constraint shifts one
channel so that it sums to the total charge of the frame (neutral, from
`fparam` or from `charge_spin`). The documentation is
`doc/model/long-range.md`.
**Credit.** This PR supersedes deepmodeling#6031 by @YuzhiLiu-ai, which introduced
the module (LES/SOG kernels, charge channels, the total-charge
constraint, the complete energy in the atomic model, and the direct-sum
operator in C++ and LAMMPS) for non-periodic systems. The first commit
here is the rebuilt form of that work and carries a `Co-authored-by`
trailer for @YuzhiLiu-ai. It is rebuilt on the interfaces that deepmodeling#6110
reserved for it, and it adds periodic systems and fine-tuning. The other
two commits are the performance work that followed.
## What the module covers
- **Configuration:** a `long_range` section (`type: latent_charge`) with
the `les` or `sog` kernel, several charge channels, the total-charge
constraint, and `periodic: true` with SPME or explicit wave numbers.
Nothing existing is removed or renamed.
- **One complete energy:** the atomic model owns the complete energy.
Training, compiled training, DDP, `dp test`, output-bias statistics and
change-bias, the Hessian and `linear_ener` compositions all see the
long-range term.
- **Fine-tuning:** a pretrained model without long range can be
fine-tuned into one with it. The added module takes the input statistics
of the fine-tuning data.
- **Frozen models:** `.pt2` and `.pte`. The graph lower reads the pair
list or the mesh of the cell as topologies after its inputs. Compressed
DPA4C models frozen for a CUDA device evaluate the module in the compact
canonical lower with `deepmd::latent_charge_sum`, which provides the
direct sum, the SPME mesh, and the MPI exchange of the charges of a
domain-decomposed system.
- **C++ and LAMMPS:** `pair_style deepmd` and `deepmd/kk`, one or
several ranks, periodic and non-periodic. A compressed model frozen for
CUDA runs on several MPI ranks; every other model runs on one rank.
- **Not supported with a long-range module:** multi-rank inference of a
model that the dedicated operator does not evaluate (such as an
uncompressed one), spin models, the tabulated ZBL potential, and
short-range bridging.
## Commits
1. **feat(long-range): latent-charge long-range module for DPA4C.** The
module: model, training, freezing, and the C, C++ and LAMMPS interfaces.
2. **perf(long-range): accelerate long-range DPA4C inference in
LAMMPS.**
- Periodic systems take part in the CUDA-graph replay of a single rank.
The cell reaches the model through pinned memory that the operator reads
on the device, so a replay evaluates the cell of its own call. The
replay key holds the mesh size; after the size changes, the model runs
eagerly for 64 calls before it captures again, so a barostat near a mesh
boundary does not recapture at every crossing.
- A module whose single-channel charge network the fused fitting kernels
reproduce (the defaults give one) is evaluated by one fused operator,
`dpa4c_canonical_compress_long_range_energy_force`. It runs one
descriptor pass, the charge network, the long-range sum, the energy
fitting with the charge-network backward, one descriptor backward with
fixed-point force assembly, and the epilogue.
- The archive records whether its compact lower reads the source CSR
(`canonical_requires_source_csr`). LAMMPS then builds the source CSR for
such a model only at steps that request the per-atom virial.
3. **perf(long-range): fuse the charge network and harden the LAMMPS
path.**
- The charge network has a fitting-route table of its own, which the
freeze measures like that of the energy fitting.
- The two fused DPA4C energy-force operators share the plan of the
fitting runs and the epilogue. The outputs of models without a
long-range module are unchanged.
- `pair_style deepmd` rejects at init a model-deviation ensemble on a
non-periodic system whose first model carries no module. `deepmd/kk`
shifts positions to the box origin only for a model with a module.
- New Kokkos LAMMPS regression:
`source/lmp/tests/test_lammps_dpa4c_long_range_kokkos.py`, run by
`test_lammps_kokkos.sh`.
## Measured performance
LAMMPS with Kokkos on an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell (compute capability
12.0), trained Air model with an LES or SOG module. Times are ms per
step, before and after the second commit:
| System | 512 atoms | 10,296 atoms |
| --- | --- | --- |
| periodic, LES | 0.665 → 0.280 | 1.469 → 1.242 |
| periodic, SOG | 0.644 → 0.277 | 1.357 → 1.137 |
| cluster, LES | 0.343 → 0.264 | 1.274 → 1.166 |
| cluster, SOG | 0.353 → 0.263 | 1.479 → 1.302 |
At 100,800 atoms (1000-step runs on two GPUs), periodic LES goes from
11.3–11.4 to 10.1–10.4 ms and periodic SOG from 9.8–10.0 to 8.9–9.0 ms.
The third commit then shortens the charge-network kernels from 47 to 39
µs per step at 10,296 atoms and from 477–493 to 429 µs at 100,800 atoms.
A periodic LES system whose cell is deformed at every step replays in
0.28–0.29 ms per step, as with a constant cell, against 0.35–0.38 ms
evaluated eagerly. Replayed and eager trajectories agree bit for bit
over 200 steps of NVE and NPT. Short-range models keep their kernel
time. The commit messages give the full conditions.
## Interfaces and compatibility
- **C API:** `DP_DPA4ComputeCanonicalGraphGPU` takes `const double*
box`, the cell of a periodic system, right after `world`. `d_coord`,
`world`, `DP_DeepPotHasLongRange` and `DP_DeepPotModelDeviHasLongRange`
are the interfaces that deepmodeling#6110 reserved, now used.
- API version 31 and the version-2 backend plugin interface were
introduced by deepmodeling#6110 after v3.2.0 and are not in a release yet, so this
PR extends them within the same version.
- **Operators:** the new operators are `latent_charge_sum` and
`dpa4c_canonical_compress_long_range_energy_force`. The schemas of the
existing operators are unchanged.
- **Frozen models:** only a model that declares long-range topologies
traces the extra canonical inputs (positions, communicator, cell), as
read from the export code. Archives of models without a module,
including those frozen with deepmodeling#6110, keep their inputs.
## Validation on this branch
The branch is based on master 4c3a598 and holds three commits
cherry-picked from the development branch.
- pre-commit over the whole range: all hooks passed.
- Rebasing onto the merged deepmodeling#6110 needed two adjustments, both checked:
- The long-range wrapper now takes the fitting-route tables from the
energy model, following the structure deepmodeling#6110 adopted in review. A trace
check confirmed that both measured tables reach the exported program.
- The linear-composition test stub `_RecordingAtomicModel` gained
`has_long_range()`. Its two `TestChangeTypeMap` tests failed before this
and pass after it (7 passed).
- On the development branch, which holds these commits plus unrelated
later ones: `source/tests/pt_expt/model/test_long_range.py`, 126 passed
on an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell (PyTorch 2.13.0+cu130).
- The other suites, the C++ tests and the Kokkos LAMMPS tests were not
rerun for this branch and are left to CI, including the `Test CUDA`
jobs.

Summary
This PR speeds up compressed DPA4C models in LAMMPS on CUDA (pt-expt backend,
pair_style deepmd/kkanddpa4spin/kk).
RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell (sm_120), the five v20260911 grades (Nano to Plus), ratio of old to new step time:
The largest system that one device runs grows from 14.05 to 22.43 million atoms, and the throughput above one million atoms grows by 2.6-3.0x.
Per-GPU tuning, change of the step at 10,296 / 100,800 atoms of diamond carbon relative to the sm_120-tuned build:
Commits
The five commits are self-contained and are easiest to review one at a time; each message records its design and its measurements.

Binaries and plugins built against C API version 30 or backend interface version 1 must be rebuilt.DP_DeepPotHasLongRange,DP_DeepPotModelDeviHasLongRangeandhas_long_range()onDeepPotandDeepPotModelDevi, together with the node-position and communicator arguments above, are the interface of a long-range module that a follow-up PR adds. No model in this PR has a long-range module, so these paths are inactive here; carrying them now avoids a second version bump of the C API and the plugin interface.Validation on this branch
The branch is based on master 1ded5d2 and holds the five commits cherry-picked from the development branch. Against the commits validated there, the rebase changes no file under
source/api_c,source/api_cc,source/lib,source/lmporsource/op.test_compact_canonical_deep_evalasserted the formeruint32source carrier. The last commit updates it to the byte-word carrier (uint8with a word axis of 4 for a small graph) and the int64source_order; the test failed before the update and passes after it.source/tests/pt_expt/descriptor1611 passed and 81 skipped (the skips need the CPU operators orDEEPMD_ENABLE_DPA1_HIGH_LMAX=ON, which this build did not compile), apart from the test above. The other Python suites, the C++ suites and the LAMMPS tests were not rerun locally for this branch and are left to CI, including theTest CUDAjobs. The validation records in the commit messages (pytest and C++ suites, bitwise LAMMPS comparisons, fp64 accuracy checks, multi-rank runs) describe the development branch.
