My Story - Why I Built SecureWipe

As a solo developer passionate about digital privacy, I became increasingly concerned about how easily deleted files can be recovered from sold devices. When you "delete" a file, it's not actually gone - the operating system just marks that space as available, but the data remains until it's overwritten.

I discovered that professional data recovery tools can reconstruct:

  • Deleted photos and videos from "free space"
  • Personal documents and financial information
  • Browser history and passwords
  • Sensitive work files and personal data

The Problem: Existing solutions were either too complex, expensive, or didn't provide the level of security I needed for complete data destruction.

My Solution: I built SecureWipe as a comprehensive, cross-platform tool that:

  • Works on Windows, Linux, and macOS
  • Supports all drive types (USB, internal, external, SSD, HDD)
  • Provides both standard free-space wiping and complete drive destruction
  • Uses realistic file signatures to trick recovery tools
  • Is completely free and open source

My Mission: To provide everyone with a professional-grade data privacy tool that ensures complete data security when selling or disposing of devices. This isn't just a project for me - it's a commitment to digital privacy and security for all users.

Solo Development: SecureWipe is developed and maintained entirely by me, Md Zarif Azfar. I handle all aspects of development, testing, documentation, and support to ensure this tool meets the highest standards of data security and user experience.

Why You Need This

When you delete files and sell your laptop or computer, the data is not truly gone. Recovery tools can:

  • Reconstruct deleted photos, videos, and documents from "free space"
  • Recover thumbnail previews of your private images
  • Find fragments of personal documents, bank statements, passwords

SecureWipe solves this by overwriting every byte of free space with garbage files that carry realistic file signatures. Recovery tools will find thousands of fake JPEGs, fake videos, and fake PDFs — but none of your real data.

Before SecureWipe: [your deleted photos] [deleted videos] [deleted docs] [free space...]
After SecureWipe: [fake_0001.jpg] [fake_0002.mp4] [fake_0003.pdf] [fake_0004.jpg] ...

How Long Does It Take?

Drive Size Free Space Estimated Time
128 GB SSD 50 GB free ~5–15 minutes
256 GB SSD 150 GB free ~15–30 minutes
512 GB SSD 400 GB free ~30–60 minutes
1 TB HDD 800 GB free ~1–3 hours
2 TB HDD 1.5 TB free ~2–5 hours

Times vary based on drive speed. SSDs are faster than HDDs.

How It Works — Technical Details

The Problem

When you delete a file, the operating system only marks the space as "available" — it does not erase the actual bytes. Recovery tools scan raw disk sectors, find known file signatures (magic bytes), and reconstruct the files.

Our Solution

SecureWipe writes thousands of fake files with correct magic bytes (the exact byte patterns recovery tools look for) but completely random content:

Fake File Type Magic Bytes Why It Matters
JPEG photo FF D8 FF E0 Tricks photo recovery tools
PNG image 89 50 4E 47 Mimics real PNG files
MP4 video 00 00 00 20 66 74 79 70 Looks like real video
PDF document 25 50 44 46 (%PDF) Mimics real PDF
DOCX file 50 4B 03 04 ZIP-based Office format
MP3 audio FF FB 90 00 Mimics real audio
AVI video 52 49 46 46 (RIFF) Looks like real AVI
+ 15 more types ... Full coverage

After filling, SecureWipe deletes all garbage files. The next recovery attempt will find thousands of garbage files instead of your real data — every sector of free space is overwritten.

File Size Strategy

Files are written in mixed sizes to mimic real usage patterns:

  • Large (100 MB – 500 MB): fake videos and archives
  • Medium (1 MB – 10 MB): fake photos and documents
  • Small (32 KB – 512 KB): fake thumbnails and small images

Section 4 — SSDs: Extra Step for Full Protection

SSDs have special features that make wiping more complex:

Why SSDs are different:

  • Wear leveling — the SSD firmware moves data around internally
  • Over-provisioning — 7–28% of NAND is reserved and inaccessible by the OS
  • TRIM — OS can tell the SSD to "zero out" deleted blocks

SecureWipe fills all OS-accessible free space, which handles most recovery risks. For maximum protection, also do one of these:

Option A — ATA Secure Erase (Linux — most reliable)

# Install hdparm
sudo apt install hdparm

# Find your drive (e.g., /dev/sda or /dev/nvme0)
sudo lsblk

# Check security status
sudo hdparm -I /dev/sda | grep -i security

# Set a temporary password
sudo hdparm --user-master u --security-set-pass p /dev/sda

# Run Secure Erase (takes 1–30 min, WIPES ENTIRE DRIVE)
sudo hdparm --user-master u --security-erase p /dev/sda

⚠️ This erases the ENTIRE drive. Do this only when you're ready to hand it off.

Option B — NVMe Sanitize (Linux, NVMe drives)

sudo apt install nvme-cli
sudo nvme sanitize /dev/nvme0 -a 4 # Crypto Erase
# or
sudo nvme sanitize /dev/nvme0 -a 2 # Block Erase

Option C — macOS Disk Utility Erase

  1. Restart Mac → hold ⌘ + R (Intel) or Power button (Apple Silicon) → Recovery Mode
  2. Open Disk Utility
  3. Select your drive → Erase
  4. Format: APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
  5. Click Erase → this performs a secure erase on SSD

Option D — Windows Reset with Drive Cleaning

  1. Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC
  2. Choose Remove everything
  3. Choose Change settings → turn on "Clean the drive" ✅
  4. Click Reset

Full Pre-Sale Checklist

Before selling your computer, follow these steps in order:

□ 1. Back up anything you want to keep (photos, documents, etc.)
□ 2. Sign out of all accounts (iCloud, Google, Microsoft, etc.)
□ 3. Deactivate software licenses (Office, Adobe, etc.)
□ 4. Run SecureWipe (this tool) ← YOU ARE HERE
□ 5. (SSD only) Run Secure Erase per Section 4 above
□ 6. Reset OS to factory settings / reinstall clean OS
□ 7. Verify: run DiskDigger or Recuva yourself — confirm only garbage shows up

Advanced: Wipe Before Factory Reset (Recommended Order)

For the strongest protection:

1. Run SecureWipe (fills free space with garbage)
2. Then factory reset / reinstall OS
→ The reset itself will format the drive
→ Any remaining data gets overwritten during OS installation

This two-step approach is the most thorough software-only method available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will this damage my SSD? A: No. SecureWipe writes normal files through the OS — the SSD's wear-leveling handles everything normally. It adds some wear (like any large file copy), but well within safe limits for a one-time operation.

Q: Will this delete my existing files? A: No. SecureWipe only fills free space — your current files are untouched. The garbage folder is created, filled, then deleted.

Q: How many passes do I need? A: 1 pass is sufficient for all modern drives (HDDs and SSDs). NIST SP 800-88 and most security standards confirm a single overwrite is enough. Use 3 passes only if you want extra peace of mind.

Q: What if the tool stops early or crashes? A: Run it again. Any leftover garbage files in .securewipe_garbage_do_not_open can be safely deleted manually. Your personal files are safe.

Q: Does this work on exFAT / NTFS / ext4 / APFS? A: Yes. SecureWipe works at the file system level — it works on any filesystem the OS can write to.

Q: I only have 5 GB free. Will it still help? A: Yes. SecureWipe fills whatever free space exists. Even 5 GB of garbage is enough to overwrite recently deleted files.

Q: Can I run this on a USB drive I'm selling? A: Yes. Use --path to point to the USB drive's mount point.

Disclaimer

SecureWipe is a free space overwriter — it overwrites sectors that the OS reports as free. Due to SSD wear-leveling and over-provisioning, it cannot guarantee 100% erasure of every physical NAND cell. For absolute certainty (e.g., highly sensitive data), follow the ATA Secure Erase / NVMe Sanitize steps in Section 4, or physically destroy the drive.

The authors are not responsible for data loss. Always keep backups of important data before running any disk tool.
