PR intention

Recover transactions when their InstantSend lock arrives before the transaction body. Previously, Firo recorded the lock as complete and only requested the missing transaction when removing a mempool conflict. An outstanding request or a cached rejection could also prevent recovery, leaving a node with the lock but no transaction to mine.

Backports Dash #4147: Do not consider islocks with unknown txes as complete (commit 3b8b3e2), with forced re-requesting adapted from Dash commit 4bfc20c.

This restores transaction recovery and lock completion; it does not introduce a next-block inclusion requirement.

Code changes brief

  • Keep verified locks with missing transactions in a separate pending map, relay them, and requeue them when the transaction enters the mempool or a block through Firo's SyncTransaction callback. Hold cs_main across the initial lookup and pending registration to avoid missing a concurrent arrival.
  • Clear stale transaction requests and request immediately from up to four peers known to have advertised the transaction. Bypass recentRejects for transactions with pending locks and remove competing mempool entries when the locked transaction arrives.
  • Preserve ChainLock precedence. For an unknown locked transaction, disconnect conflicting blocks to make its inputs available without permanently marking those blocks invalid.
  • Deliver lock-completion notifications and refresh the block-template transaction counter even when the wallet is disabled.

Regression coverage and results

qa/rpc-tests/llmq-is-cl-conflicts.py now advertises a transaction but withholds its body, delivers its IS lock, and verifies an immediate second getdata request without advancing mocktime. It then delivers the transaction and checks mempool conflict removal, completed InstantSend locking, mining and ChainLock confirmation. A second case first submits the transaction over P2P while a conflicting transaction is in the mempool, exercising recovery through the rejection cache. The existing block-conflict case also checks that conflicts remain available until the locked transaction arrives.

  • Red: the new regression fails on the unpatched comparison binary at the immediate re-request assertion. Its relevant InstantSend, validation and networking source files match this PR's base.
  • Green: the complete updated llmq-is-cl-conflicts.py passes with the backport.
  • Additional checks: llmq-is-retroactive.py and llmq-is-spark.py pass; 10 cases across mempool_tests, llmq_signing_shares_tests, llmq_chainlock_cache_tests, llmq_dkgsessionhandler_tests and quorums_signing_share_tests pass.
  • Debug builds of firod, firo-cli and test_firo succeed on macOS arm64 with lock-order checking enabled. No lock-order assertions were found in these functional-test logs; git diff --check passes.

These are local targeted results; the full CI matrix has not been run locally.

Keep signature-verified IS locks pending until their transactions arrive,
then reprocess them through SyncTransaction. Force immediate re-requests
and bypass recent rejection caching so a missing or previously rejected
transaction can replace mempool conflicts and become mineable.

Preserve ChainLock precedence and defer permanent block invalidation until
the locked transaction is known. Notify lock completion and refresh block
templates even when the wallet is disabled.

Backport Dash PR #4147, commit
3b8b3e254aa3b95a2fda0bde702d3f2880fb99fb, and adapt forced re-requesting
from Dash commit 4bfc20cb6782da74f92ac99fbac4c7eebbe34192 to Firo's
request queues. Bound recovery requests to four peers.

Add lock-before-transaction regressions for both an outstanding request
and a prior mempool-conflict rejection. Verify immediate re-request,
conflict replacement, InstantSend completion, mining and ChainLocking.

Validation: regression fails on the unpatched comparison binary and
passes on this build; llmq-is-cl-conflicts.py, llmq-is-retroactive.py,
llmq-is-spark.py and 10 mempool/quorum unit cases pass.

CodeAnt-AI Description

Recover transactions when InstantSend locks arrive first

What Changed

  • Nodes keep verified InstantSend locks pending while requesting their missing transaction, including when an earlier request or rejection would have delayed recovery.
  • Competing transactions remain available until the locked transaction arrives; then the lock takes precedence and removes conflicting transactions.
  • Conflicting blocks are disconnected without being permanently invalidated while the locked transaction is unknown.

Impact

✅ Locked transactions recover without waiting for retry delays
✅ Competing transactions stay available until the locked transaction arrives
✅ Recovered locked transactions can be mined and ChainLocked

P2 Badge Complete pending locks from block callbacks

When a node running with -txindex=0 first learns the locked transaction in a connected block, this moves only the lock and discards the transaction supplied to SyncTransaction. The worker subsequently calls GetTransaction(..., fAllowSlow=false) after ConnectTip has removed the transaction from the mempool, so without the transaction index it cannot retrieve the block transaction and puts the lock back into pendingNoTxInstantSendLocks; no later callback completes it, leaving IsLocked false and omitting lock notifications. Pass the transaction through to lock completion or otherwise support the block-only lookup.

P2 Badge Preserve InstantSend bookkeeping when evicting conflicts

When a previously unknown locked transaction arrives while a conflicting transaction is in the mempool, these calls remove the conflict before the lock worker runs, but unlike RemoveMempoolConflictsForLock they never call RemoveConflictedTx. The worker then finds no mempool conflict to clean up, so the evicted transaction remains indefinitely in nonLockedTxs, nonLockedTxsByInputs, and the input-request tracking structures; HandleFullyConfirmedBlock also cannot remove it because its pindexMined is null. Route these removals through the InstantSend cleanup path or notify SyncTransaction for the removed entries.

P1 Badge Lock the mempool before removing ProTx conflicts

In the lock-before-transaction path this calls CTxMemPool::removeProTxConflicts without holding pool.cs. That method directly reads mapProTxRefs, mapProTxCollaterals, mapProTxAddresses, mapTx, and related indices without acquiring the lock itself; its only pre-existing caller is removeForBlock, which already holds cs. A concurrent mempool reader or mutation can therefore race these container accesses and invalidate iterators or crash the node whenever a pending locked transaction is accepted. Hold pool.cs across this removal, as the established caller does.

P2 Badge Remove pending descendant locks after a ChainLock conflict

When a ChainLock overrides an unknown parent transaction whose IS lock is pending, this erases only that exact pending hash. If another pending IS lock spends an output of the parent, RemoveChainedInstantSendLocks cannot discover it because pending locks were deliberately not written to the database, so the descendant remains indefinitely in pendingNoTxInstantSendLocks even though its parent can never be accepted. It will continue to be served, bypass rejection caching, and retain memory; traverse and erase pending descendants as well as database-backed descendants.

P1 Badge Keep conflicting blocks disconnected until the transaction arrives

For an unknown locked transaction, resetting the failure flags immediately makes the just-disconnected conflicting chain eligible again while the pending lock is not present in the database and GetConflictingLock therefore cannot reject that chain. Any subsequent ActivateBestChain—for example when the next block arrives or a peer sends getblocks—can reconnect the conflicting spend before the locked transaction body arrives. The locked transaction then fails mempool admission with missing inputs, so SyncTransaction never requeues its IS lock and recovery is permanently defeated. Retain a temporary block exclusion until the transaction is available, or make block validation honor the pending lock.

CodeAnt Nitpicks

5 code suggestions

1. Moving the lock out of pendingNoTxInstantSendLocks makes IsWaitingForTx false until database insertion; an RBF competitor can replace the locked transaction during this verification window.

Race condition · src/llmq/quorums_instantsend.cpp:1055-1056

2. This restores the disconnected branch as a candidate; a later chain activation can reconnect its conflicting transactions before the locked transaction arrives, making their inputs unavailable again.

Logic error · src/llmq/quorums_instantsend.cpp:1362

3. Only four peers are queried, with no retry after silence or notfound; if they no longer retain the body, the lock can remain pending indefinitely.

Incomplete implementation · src/llmq/quorums_instantsend.cpp:1425-1427

4. Each mempool admission linearly scans every unresolved lock, and these entries have no expiry; many unavailable transaction bodies make validation progressively slower.

Performance · src/llmq/quorums_instantsend.cpp:1571-1575

5. This map also holds newly received locks before signature verification; exposing them here lets GETDATA relay invalid locks as though they were accepted.

Api mismatch · src/llmq/quorums_instantsend.cpp:1546-1550

CodeAnt PR Risk: Medium Risk

  • The PR needs attention before merging because unresolved locks can leave a growing pending-lock backlog.
  • The pending-lock map has no visible expiry, while IsWaitingForTx scans it during transaction admission; a backlog can degrade mempool processing.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • InstantSend locks can now be received before their transactions without prematurely rejecting competing transactions.
    • Nodes request missing locked transactions again and process them when they arrive, including in cases where a transaction was previously rejected.
    • Conflicts are handled correctly while a lock is incomplete; once the locked transaction arrives and is locked, competing transactions are rejected.

Walkthrough

InstantSend now tracks valid locks whose transactions have not arrived, requests those transactions from peers, and processes the locks when the transactions arrive. Conflict handling and RPC tests cover this pending-lock flow.

The change lets a node recover a transaction whose InstantSend lock arrives first. Two gaps remain. A locked Spark spend can still be rejected because of a competing Spark transaction already in the mempool. A block that conflicts with a still-pending lock can also be reconnected before the transaction arrives, which can leave nodes on different chains. Both should be resolved or explicitly accepted before merging.

Keep pending-lock conflicts out of candidate activation.

When the locked transaction is unknown, InvalidateBlock disconnects the active conflicting block, and ResetBlockFailureFlags can reinsert that block and its descendants into setBlockIndexCandidates. A later ProcessNewBlock call invokes ActivateBestChain, which can select that branch.

ConnectBlock does not prevent the reconnection. GetConflictingLock checks only the persisted lock database, while the unknown lock remains in pendingNoTxInstantSendLocks.

After reconnection, the locked transaction can fail mempool acceptance with missing inputs. The failed acceptance does not emit SyncTransaction, so the pending lock is not promoted. This can leave nodes that received the transaction on the permanently invalidated chain while other nodes return to the conflicting chain.

Exclude branches that conflict with pending locks from candidate activation. Do not rely only on the ConnectBlock filter, because rejecting the branch there can permanently invalidate it before the locked transaction is known. The existing regression sends the locked transaction immediately after checking good_tip; add coverage that activates a new block before sending the locked transaction.

Clear Spark conflicts for pending InstantSend locks.

The Spark checks at src/validation.cpp:949-971 reject a transaction that conflicts with a mempool linking tag or Spark name. They run before the IsWaitingForTx(hash) branch at src/validation.cpp:1051-1054.

For a waiting Spark transaction, remove conflicting Spark mempool entries by linking tag and Spark name before returning txn-mempool-conflict. Use GetMempoolConflictingTxHash and removeRecursive, while preserving the existing Spark parsing and validity checks. Add a Spark regression test.

Review comment at @src/validation.cpp around lines 1051 - 1054:
Update the Spark conflict handling in the validation flow before the
IsWaitingForTx(hash) branch: for a waiting Spark transaction, find mempool
conflicts by linking tag and Spark name with GetMempoolConflictingTxHash, then
remove them with removeRecursive before returning txn-mempool-conflict. Preserve
the existing Spark parsing and validity checks, and add a regression test for
this case.
