PR intention

Anchor mainnet history at ChainLocked block 1,390,000. A chain of stripped MTP headers can otherwise claim work without proving it during header sync. This PR also refreshes defaultAssumeValid, nMinimumChainWork, and chainTxData using that block. The hash, chainwork, time, and transaction count came from a synced mainnet node, as described in the original PR.

Code changes brief

  • Require block 1,390,000 to have hash 156bf05c91cdc4a88c9d993c29402f89a901274797ed98958666b128394353c5 and later headers to descend from it. Add the hash to the mainnet checkpoints. Until the anchor is known, keep earlier headers provisional for chain selection and block download. Recheck persisted indexes and reject an active MTP chainstate that cannot be tied to the anchor.
  • Move the existing once-ProgPoW-always rule into contextual header validation. Apply it to previously indexed headers and persisted indexes too.
  • Add regression tests for both header rules and for activating pre-anchor blocks after the anchor arrives.

The mainnet chainwork value is 0x0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000017e2cd0ce4d870bd3; the existing chainTxData update remains in this PR. Testnet, devnet, and regtest receive no fixed anchor.

An existing node stopped during MTP history before learning the anchor may need a full -reindex after upgrade. Pruned nodes may need to download that history again. The anchor prevents an alternate historical chain from becoming active; it does not stop peers from sending provisional headers or withholding the anchored chain.

Validation: all five progpow_tests pass; the changed C++ sources compile; git diff --check passes. Clang-Tidy completed on the four changed translation units using the matching compilation database with two unsupported GCC-only flags removed. Cppcheck was partial because it could not parse existing code and a Boost test macro. The local Windows test target needed a manual final link with libevent DNS and Winsock; no project link files were changed. A full mainnet reindex and live peer sync were not run.

Move the mainnet defaultAssumeValid, nMinimumChainWork and chainTxData
from their 2018-2019 values to block 1390000 (7 Oct 2026), which is
ChainLocked.

- defaultAssumeValid: block 1390000 (was block 184200)
- nMinimumChainWork: chainwork of block 1390000
- chainTxData: block 1390000's timestamp and transaction count, with a
  rate of 0.0194 tx/s measured over 1-19 Oct 2026

The values were read from a synced mainnet node with getblockhash,
getblockheader and the UpdateTip lines in debug.log. Testnet and devnet
are unchanged.

As doc/release-process.md says, review this with a
-reindex-chainstate -assumevalid=0 run before release.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Updates

    • Advanced mainnet validation metadata, checkpoints, and transaction statistics through block 1,390,000.
    • Strengthened block and header validation to require connection to the configured historical anchor.
    • Improved synchronization and startup behavior when the local chain is below the anchor height.
    • Updated peer and block processing to favor chains connected to the trusted anchor.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Prevented invalid pre-transition chains and unanchored chains from being accepted.
    • Improved handling of ProgPoW transition validation and anchored chain activation.

Walkthrough

Consensus parameters now include an MTP anchor. Mainnet metadata points to block 1,390,000. Validation and peer processing reject unanchored chains. ProgPoW transition checks and tests cover new and indexed headers.

Changes

Consensus anchor configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure the mainnet MTP anchor
src/consensus/params.h, src/chainparams.cpp
Consensus::Params stores the MTP anchor height and hash. Mainnet metadata and checkpoint statistics reference block 1,390,000.

Block and chain validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate anchored block chains
src/validation.h, src/validation.cpp
IsBlockIndexAnchored and block-index processing now restrict candidates, headers, block acceptance, loading, and startup to valid anchored chains. ProgPoW transition checks also cover previously indexed headers.
Test anchor and transition enforcement
src/test/progpow_tests.cpp
Tests cover legacy-PoW rejection after the ProgPoW transition and MTP-anchor rejection, acceptance, indexing, chain activation, and startup behavior.

Peer synchronization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Apply anchoring to peer block flow
src/net_processing.cpp
Peer availability, download selection, compact-block handling, direct header fetches, and initial header synchronization now account for MTP anchoring.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 26578

The change anchors mainnet MTP history and tightens ProgPoW transition checks. The earlier startup failure for nodes below an unknown anchor is reported as fixed. Existing nodes may need a reindex after upgrading, but no merge-blocking risk remains.

CodeAnt-AI Description

Anchor mainnet validation and sync to ChainLocked block 1,390,000

What Changed

  • Mainnet nodes only promote or download chains connected to the ChainLocked anchor, and reject headers that conflict with it.
  • ProgPoW headers that attempt to revert to pre-transition blocks are rejected, including headers already stored by older nodes.
  • Fresh mainnet sync can skip historical script checks through the anchor; sync progress estimates now use updated transaction data.
  • Stored chains that fail the new validity checks require a reindex before startup can continue.

Impact

✅ Faster initial mainnet validation
✅ Unanchored forks cannot become active
✅ ProgPoW rollback headers are rejected

CodeAnt PR Risk: Low Risk

  • The PR appears safe to merge; the anchor is enforced in header validation and chain selection.
  • New tests cover rejection of non-anchor descendants and invalid ProgPOW transitions.

Assessed commit: c59458c2b90b

Require the ChainLocked anchor before promoting historical headers or downloading blocks. Reject persisted unanchored or invalid ProgPoW headers, and enforce the ProgPoW transition during header validation.

Comment thread src/validation.cpp Outdated
LoadBlockIndexDB refused to start any mainnet node whose tip is below
block 1390000 and that had not seen the anchor header yet, because
IsBlockIndexAnchored returns false for every block while the anchor is
unknown. A desktop wallet last opened before 7 Oct 2026 would have hit
this after upgrading, and -reindex would not have helped.

Only run the check once the anchor header is known or the tip has
reached the anchor height. Until then FindMostWorkChain holds the tip
and header sync fetches the anchor.

Add mtp_anchor_unknown_at_startup, which reloads the block index with
the anchor unknown. It fails without this change.
