Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Changes

    • Spark payments are submitted as a single transaction rather than split across multiple transactions.
    • The spendsparksplit command is no longer available.
    • Fee subtraction is unavailable for anonymous-mode payments to exchange addresses.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Spark transaction size estimates now use a consistent calculation for one-input and multi-input spends, improving fee estimates.
    • Attempts to subtract fees from anonymous-mode payments to exchange addresses are rejected before wallet unlock.

Walkthrough

The PR removes Spark single-input batch spending and the spendsparksplit RPC. It updates wallet and GUI spend handling, sets both regtest Spark activation heights to block 1, and revises Spark validation and state tests.

Changes

Spark spends and validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Activation settings and Spark validation
src/chainparams.cpp, src/spark/sparkwallet.cpp, src/test/spark_*, src/test/sparkname_tests.cpp, src/test/spark_state_test.cpp, qa/rpc-tests/*
Regtest activates both Spark heights at block 1. Tests cover V1 validation across activation heights, multi-input spends, aliased group IDs, unknown references, and block validation. Spark state tests create coins directly and check coin-group changes. RPC test comments are revised.
Wallet spend construction and RPC changes
src/qt/walletmodel.*, src/wallet/*, src/rpc/client.cpp
WalletModel uses the shared transaction-construction path across activation heights and passes caller coin control to Spark-name transaction construction. The single-input batch planner, related wallet methods, fragmented-funds exception, and spendsparksplit RPC are removed.
GUI send handling and Spark estimates
src/qt/coincontroldialog.cpp, src/qt/sendcoins*, src/qt/test/test_sendcoinsentry.*, src/qt/bitcoinstrings.cpp, src/qt/locale/bitcoin_en.ts
The GUI submits one prepared Spark transaction. It rejects private sends to exchange addresses when fee subtraction is selected. Spark size estimates use a shared formula. Fee-subtraction eligibility and Spark-related messages change, and one send-entry test is removed.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f6f0e

GUI private sends can fail before Chaum V2 activation. Make the transaction-format check height-aware before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f6f0e

The single-transaction design reduces partial-payment handling, but removing the pre-activation path makes ordinary GUI Spark spending fail before Chaum V2 activation. Production networks retain separate activation heights, while the default regression-test configuration activates both changes immediately. Exposure depends on release timing; no authorization bypass or weakened consensus rule was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Removing the pre-H2 preparation route makes ordinary GUI Spark spending require V2 before construction can produce it. The base routed pre-activation payments through single-input V1 preparation; the head routes them through an unconditional V2 check, although construction still chooses V1 until H2. Deployment before H2 therefore blocks the GUI's private-fund spending path. Post-H2 deployment avoids this failure, but that release constraint is not established, and production activation windows remain distinct.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported adverse outcome is loss of the ordinary GUI private-spending capability for wallets operating before H2, not an established theft or consensus-bypass path. The condition can affect each such upgraded wallet; the inspected RPC route still requires an unlocked, available Spark wallet.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Spend ownership remains enforced through linking-tag checks against previously spent state, duplicate tags within a transaction, and mempool conflict state. These are downstream controls on repeated or competing spends, distinct from preparation-time coin availability checks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing commit path writes pending Spark output metadata transactionally before mempool acceptance and attempts transactional erasure on rejection. Erasure failure is logged. This logic is unchanged by the PR; inspected metadata consumers populate transaction addresses, amounts and memos, so stale metadata alone does not establish newly granted spend authority.

CodeAnt-AI Description

Route Spark payments through standard spend construction instead of splitting them into separate transactions

What Changed

  • Spark payments no longer use the temporary workflow that split a payment across multiple transactions; sends use the standard Spark spend path.
  • The temporary spendsparksplit RPC command has been removed.
  • Fee subtraction is available for private sends, but not for private payments to exchange addresses or Rosen Bridge transfers.

Impact

✅ One transaction per Spark send
✅ No partial payouts from split-send batches
✅ Fee subtraction available for eligible private sends

Use the height-aware Spark format check.

Before nSparkChaumV2StartBlock, CreateSparkSpendTransaction can return a V1 spend. The GUI rejects that spend because it requires IsSparkSpendV2(), although V1 is valid at that height. Replace the unconditional V2 check with IsSparkSpendFormatAllowed.

Rechecked all four inline comments against a96bfe43 on 2026-09-28. Retiring the temporary single-input wallet path is reasonable for the post-H2 cleanup. Please clarify in the PR description that private-to-EX sends are being restored.

The EX partial-completion and ignored fee-subtraction findings remain valid. I corrected the fee comment's attribution: the checkbox was already enabled post-H2; removing the EX guard exposes the mismatch. I narrowed the historical-test comment to the specific H1/H2 coverage lost, and withdrew/resolved the regtest-override finding because rejecting H1>H2 is intentional and both overrides can be supplied together.

One additional EX issue remains at sendcoinsdialog.cpp:559-580: for a mixed send containing an EX recipient and a non-EX recipient with fee subtraction, the EX branch skips copying prepared amounts into realRecipients. The non-EX recipient is shown the requested amount even though the prepared payment is smaller and the total uses that smaller amount. Reconcile the prepared amounts before replacing the intermediate recipient.

I withdraw the earlier missing-intermediate-output remark as a separate bug finding. That branch is silent, but successful construction preserves the intermediate script and I have not established a normal path that reaches it. The confirmed stage-2 failure described inline is sufficient to justify explicit partial-completion handling.

The RPC migration note remains valid: spendsparksplit exists in the published v0.14.17.2, v0.14.18.0, and v0.14.18.1 sources. Please document its removal and migration to spendspark, which returns a single txid string instead of an array.

Validation: exact-head source/diff review and caller tracing. No GUI or functional tests were run for this re-review.

Removing this guard re-enables the existing two-stage path. Stage 1 is committed and the form cleared at lines 790-815 before stage 2 is prepared. With -spendzeroconfchange=0, AvailableCoins(..., true, ...) excludes the intermediate output until confirmation or an InstantSend lock, so the EX payment can fail after Spark funds have moved to a wallet-owned transparent address. Please retain the guard or make partial completion explicit, including the first-stage txid and recovery steps.

Clarified after re-review at a96bfe43: the checkbox was already enabled post-H2 in the base. Removing the private-to-EX guard in sendcoinsdialog.cpp makes this mismatch reachable again.

For a private send to an EX address, sendcoinsdialog.cpp:476 silently clears the recipient's fSubtractFeeFromAmount before either transaction is prepared. For an EX-only payment, the requested amount is therefore sent in full and both fees are funded on top despite the checked box. Please disable or reject fee subtraction for private-to-EX recipients, or implement it and show the resulting amount in confirmation.

Narrowed after re-review at a96bfe43: my statement that the remaining H1<H2 coverage was only one cover-set test was too broad. H1<H2 cases remain for cover-set binding, mempool eviction, Spark Names, and wallet behavior. This is a regression-coverage request, not a demonstrated consensus bug in this PR.

The specific coverage lost is the distinction between H1 and H2 for V1 input counts, unknown references, canonical group IDs, and exact reference sets. This replacement test sets H1=H2 and checks below both and at/above both; it cannot catch those rules being assigned to the wrong activation. The deleted historical-batch and reference tests did check relevant H1<=height<H2 behavior. Please preserve a focused block-validation case for that interval, where the H1 restrictions apply but the H2 group-ID/reference rules do not yet apply. Mainnet retains that historical interval (1355970 through 1370999).

CodeAnt PR Risk: Medium Risk

  • The PR needs attention before merging.
  • In src/spark/sparkwallet.cpp, V1 construction can select multiple inputs between single-input activation and Chaum V2, although consensus rejects those spends.

src/qt/walletmodel.cpp:1471-1478
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Accept the pre-activation V1 transaction format.

CreateSparkSpendTransaction creates a V1 transaction when expectedNextBlockHeight is below nSparkChaumV2StartBlock. The GUI then rejects that transaction because it requires IsSparkSpendV2(). This causes pre-activation Spark sends to fail with “Unable to create a versioned Spark transaction.”

Make the postcondition require V1 before activation and V2 at or after activation.
