Highlights

  • Read aloud marks the sentence being read and follows it.
  • Settings follow your account across browsers.

Added

  • Read aloud: the sentence being read is marked and followed; tap a sentence or select text to start there.
  • Read aloud: back button (once: this sentence again; twice: the one before).
  • Read aloud: speed slider, 0.5× to 3×.
  • Settings, Voices: speed test for each voice.

  • Read aloud loads on first use.
  • Dependency floors raised for known vulnerabilities.

Fixed

  • Red and Dark: text no longer matches its background (#119).
  • Private mode: sign-in could refuse the right password.
  • Signing in shows your own library without a reload.
  • Change password could keep the old password in the field.
  • Read aloud: first tap on iPhone, taps on every page, menu closes, no false "slow" message.
  • Read aloud: Automatic avoids voices measured too slow.
  • Arabic and Hebrew: spacing and arrow direction.
  • Offline PDF library list matches the app's.
  • espeak's test voices are hidden.

The list offline was read off the phone's copy of the ZIM (database.js),
which has no sizes, and a kept ZIM answered before the server's own
answer kept in the cache. A document library's list now comes from the
kept server answer when there is one, and the app keeps that answer as
soon as the library starts coming, so it is there even if the list was
never opened online.

The test badge was typed by hand and already stale. Scorecard reads
6/10; it comes back once signed releases, pinned actions and the
dependency fixes lift it past 8.

Every sentence read aloud now times its synthesis: the first chunk
with the model loaded (first_s), the same while it loads (cold_s),
and seconds of work per second of speech (rtf), as moving averages.
They live in voices/timings.json under a fingerprint of Zimi's
version, each engine and its model, and the machine (CPU model and
count, memory), so a release, an engine update, a new voice model or
new hardware starts them over.

POST /manage/voices/test says a short sentence and a passage to a
scratch file (never the audio cache) and keeps what they took. Both
voice payloads carry the timings, for Settings and for Automatic.

…t keeps up

Settings, Voices: one Test all voices button (an admin's) tests every
engine in the background the way Read aloud uses it: the first chunk
after a rest (model loading), again warm, then a page back to back.
From that it keeps, per engine, the pauses a reading has at each
speed. The language table gains three rows under the voice names:
first words, first words after a rest, and the fastest speed it reads
at without pausing.

Read aloud's Automatic starts with an engine that keeps up at the
chosen speed (measured pauses, else seconds of work per second of
speech, else this browser's own "slow" mark) and no longer switches
voice once words were heard: a late chunk marks the engine slow for
the next reading instead. The bar's voice menu says "(Too slow)"
beside an engine that cannot keep up at this speed.

The test ran the voices best first, so the slowest (Natural) held the
numbers back; it now runs the quickest first. An engine with no model to
load (eSpeak) never noted a time after a rest; the test's first chunk
is that time for every engine. This device's own voice is timed in the
same tap, in the browser, while the server tests its voices: two words
at no volume, the second's wait being both its first words and the
pause between a reading's chunks. Kept in this browser. Under 0.1 s
reads "<0.1 s", not "0 s".

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The test said a greeting and then one 180-character passage three
times. It now reads a paragraph with what slows speech (numbers, units,
a name, an abbreviation), cut by the page's own chunker, so the chunks
are the ones a reading asks for. In ten languages.

Once a voice is measured, the one word under its name comes from the
numbers in relative terms: instant, fast, slow, slower by first words,
or too slow to read aloud when it pauses in a reading at 1x.

Red's filter (--red-picture) sent every grey from 30% up to full red,
so foss.cooking's dark grey page and its white text, and its search box
and placeholder, were one red. Dimmed before the red is drawn, the
chain is linear: black stays black, white is full red, each grey keeps
its place. Same chain in apps.css and the PDF reader.

A page's own dark mode (MediaWiki's) turns its text light but cannot
reach a colour written on an element: the LGBTQIA+ Wiki's boxes
(style="background-color:#FEC2DC") kept light text on light pink, in
Dark and in Red. Such a box now keeps its hue and goes dark with the
page; the light face restores it.

The Dictionary's Say was a full red pill with white text in Red, the
brightest thing on the screen; it is a lit outline, as Zimi's chosen
pill is.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
One stroke round Say and its caret, the divider in the same dim red,
on the pills' own ground: the lit outline stood out from its
neighbours, the divider most.

…Read aloud marks speeds too slow

The button said "Testing Natural... 3 of 4". The table now shows it:
the voice being timed turns, numbers from before the Test stay dimmed
until their voice's new ones come (the server says when the Test
started), and the button says Testing. Beside it, when the voices were
last tested.

Read aloud's speed menu says (Too slow) at a speed the voice pauses at,
as its voice menu does; Settings' Read aloud picker dims a voice too slow
at the chosen speed. This device's voice counts, from its own timing.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
… slow

A speed the reading voice pauses at: on Automatic the reading goes on
from its sentence in a voice that keeps up; a voice picked by name keeps
reading, the bar names it (Too slow), and a toast offers one that keeps
up, switching at once. The speed menu is plain again.

The three print tests failed only after the whole-book test. PDF_SHOWN
asked only whether the reader frame held a PDF, and a closed reader keeps
its last one, so the busy-server test saw the book's PDF before its own
retry, never closed the reader, and the next two tests found the Print
icon hidden. PDF_SHOWN now needs the reader open; each busy test closes
the reader on its way out; and the busy server asks for 3 s, not 1, as the
retry came 0.14 s after the test's checks.

"First words" and "After a rest" left people asking what the rest
was. The columns are the warm and cold start times, so say that.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
A voice stops after ten idle minutes, so the first play is usually a
cold start: that row leads. "Keeps up to" becomes "Top speed".

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The speed menu keeps its presets (0.75x is new) and gains a - speed +
row beneath them. The audio changes speed at the tap; the voice is
asked whether it keeps up once the taps stop, so five quick taps
restart nothing.

A Test now works out the pauses at 0.75x to 3x; a speed between two
measured ones reads the next one up, which never pauses less. Top
speed in Settings can say 2.5x or 3x.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The auth and access tests set and check passwords hundreds of times at
600,000 PBKDF2 rounds each. In-process the hash and its check use the
same count, so nothing is lost at 1,000; servers started as zimi serve
keep the real count and never read a password the test process wrote.
Seven auth test files: 187s to 33s, 231 passing either way.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Eric didn't like the presets list with - and +. Tapping the speed now
opens a small slider from 0.5x to 3x in 0.05 steps; under a finger it
lands on 1x, 1.5x or 2x when near one, while arrow keys reach every
step. The marks under it are a tap each. The bar's own button shows
the speed as it moves; the sheet has no number of its own.

The bar is not redrawn while a finger is on the slider (that would
drop the drag); the audio changes speed as it moves, and the voice is
asked whether it keeps up once it settles.

Scorecard's Vulnerabilities check scores the lowest version each
specifier allows, so the old floors (mcp 1.0, zeroconf 0.130, Pillow
10.0, certifi 2024.1) flagged 24 advisories. pip-audit on the floors
found them; on the resolved tree (mcp 1.30.0, Pillow 13.0.0,
zeroconf 0.151.5, certifi 2026.10.19) it finds none. Pillow 13 needs
Python 3.11, so 3.10 keeps 12.3.0 behind a marker. mcp stays below 2.

Both publish jobs now attest dist/ and dist-mcp/ before upload, the
same step the desktop and Docker releases already use.

A version's CHANGELOG section may open with a ### Highlights block of
one to three sentences. Auto Release now publishes that text plus a
link to the full entry at the version's tag; without the block it
copies the whole section as before. The extraction moves from inline
awk into scripts/release_notes.py so it can be tested. The release
body heredoc also stops stripping ten leading spaces from the notes.

…election or a tap sets where

The article's own text nodes are read (not innerText), each piece keeping its
node, so every chunk and sentence maps to a DOM Range, marked with the CSS
Custom Highlight API (no DOM change; absent API = no mark). The place in a
chunk is the share of audio played, or the browser voice's boundary events.
The page scrolls once per screenful, stops when the person moves it, resumes
from the voice-state mark or when the sentence is back in view; a book on
pages turns the page. A selection is read alone (also from the highlight bar);
a tap on a sentence seeks. Books start at the open page and get a Read aloud
button in their own header. No word highlight: no engine reports word times.

Eric: "Dr. Smith isn't two sentences". The hand-written pattern cut at
every full stop with a short list of exceptions. Sentences now come
from Intl.Segmenter (Unicode's rules: quotes, ellipses, ?!, decimals,
Hindi and Arabic marks), and a cut after an abbreviation is joined
back, as ICU's suppressions and Punkt do: a lower-case start, an
initial (J. R. R. Tolkien; not English "I."), a dotted one (U.S.,
e.g., p.m.) or a listed one for the article's language (Dr., Jan.,
No., vs., z.B., Mme.). Chrome, Safari and Firefox cut the same; the
pattern stays for browsers without Intl.Segmenter and now keeps a
closing quote with its sentence.

A heading or list item has no stop of its own, so the voice ran it
into the next block ("Tides Harbours keep..."). The spoken text gets
a full stop there (。 in Chinese and Japanese); the page is unchanged.

One set of helpers beside tPlural (fmtNum, fmtDate, fmtPct, cmpText,
cmpTitle, _weekFirstDay) on cached Intl objects, in Zimi's language in
the phone's region when the phone speaks it (en-GB: 20/10/2026, weeks
from Monday). Bare toLocaleString/toLocaleDateString/localeCompare calls
in app.js and create.js go through them; tPlural writes {n} the same
way; fmtBytes formats on Intl units (1,5 Go) with English keeping KB.
The Almanac calendar starts on the locale's first weekday (CLDR table
where the browser has no week info). The catalog footer's English
'sources / categories' is translated; the dead LANG_NAMES table and
formatLanguage are gone; language pills share _langOwnName.

Tests: test_locale_conventions.cjs; app_source.localeHelpers for the vm
tests; size table gains a localized case; map_topbar and tube_surface
follow the Read aloud menu's _ttsOffered.

Every start, tap and back begins a first chunk, capped at 120 characters
for a quicker first word; a longer first sentence was hard-split there
("found in the Book of Documents, | involves two..."). The cap now only
keeps a second sentence out; a sentence is split only past a full
chunk's 240.

📝 Walkthrough

This release adds sentence-aware read-aloud playback, voice timing and speed tests, and account-wide settings synchronization. It adds Almanac overlay dismissal controls and updates calendar behavior. It also changes release-note generation, PyPI build attestations, dependency minimums, localization, layout, and PDF spread selection. The diff includes new and updated tests across these features.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d19da

Account settings can be missing from backups in a narrow case and can be overwritten if the settings file is corrupt. There are also two small keyboard-focus and timer cleanup issues. These are worth fixing but do not block the release.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to d19da

Routine account isolation is preserved, and package publishing now requires provenance generation to succeed. A narrow account-lifecycle race can leave preferences for a later account using the same name. Its demonstrated scope is preference state, not elevated privileges. Some deployment and recovery behavior remains unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The new settings store uses a reusable account name rather than an account generation. A settings POST can resolve its owner before deletion, then write after delete_user removes the account, sessions, and settings. Recreating that name can expose or apply the surviving preferences to the replacement account. This extends the pre-existing per-name cleanup race to automatically synchronized settings. Exploitation requires overlapping requests and administrative deletion/recreation; the demonstrated effect is preference confidentiality and integrity, not privilege escalation.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified lifecycle race targets the settings belonging to a deleted account name that is later reused. It requires a request authorized before deletion and a subsequent account recreation. The inspected browser consumes only allowed preference keys, bounding the demonstrated effect to preference state rather than account roles, credentials, arbitrary filesystem access, or other users selected by the attacker.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An already-resolved settings POST can pause before persistence, outlive account deletion and cleanup, then recreate usersettings/name.json. A new account with the same case-folded name reads that surviving document. Session deletion blocks later requests but cannot prevent this already-authorized operation, and the final settings commit checks filename safety rather than account generation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Invalid trusted-proxy assertions are rejected by the outer HTTP handlers before settings ownership resolution. Although the lower-level identity resolver permits local-credential fallback, the inspected GET and POST dispatch paths do not allow rejected SSO credentials to reach that fallback.
  • observed — Named users own their own data. Primary-admin credentials map to the reserved admin owner. Explicit open-management mode deliberately maps every browser to that same owner; management-disabled open mode does not grant anonymous data ownership. This is shared admin state by policy, not an anonymous-to-named-user transition.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The voice benchmark bounds the number and length of input chunks, serializes synthesis, removes temporary audio in cleanup blocks, releases the synthesis lock on failure, and clears running status or records an error at termination. Timing persistence stores performance measurements under a runtime fingerprint rather than submitted speech text.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind account-owned persistence and write authorization to an immutable account generation, and serialize deletion with final commit validation. This would prevent delayed operations from an old identity from affecting a replacement account with the same display name.

Restore focus when Escape closes Earth settings.

If focus is on a settings radio, this document-level capture handler closes #ae-set and stops the event before the Earth-view Escape handler runs. The Earth-view handler normally focuses #ae-gear. Restore that focus on Escape so keyboard focus does not remain in the hidden panel or move to the page body.

After a turn iOS can leave the shell's page scrolled, the PDF's bars
above the screen, and a tap where Back was only hid them (Eric: "I
rotated to landscape and back to portrait"). A change of width now
shows the bars and scrolls the shell back to its top.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Handle settings-only accounts when userdata/ is absent.

A settings-only account can occur because the settings endpoint writes through change_settings() and does not create a userdata file. However, the omission occurs only when the entire userdata/ directory is absent. If the directory exists, all_user_data() continues to scan usersettings/.

When userdata/ is absent, all_user_data() returns before scanning usersettings/. An overwrite restore then does not include those accounts in its deletion set, so their existing settings can remain.

Continue with the settings scan when userdata/ is absent or unreadable.

Stop overwriting settings after a failed read.

change_settings() calls load_settings(), which returns an empty document when the settings file exists but cannot be read or parsed. The next accepted change then writes that empty document to the same path, and the existing content is lost. Treat a read or parse failure as an error, and skip the write in that case. The fill_only path has the same exposure, and the same check covers it.

Update change_settings() so read or parse failures from load_settings() are
treated as errors and return before writing, preserving the existing settings
file; keep the existing behavior for a missing file, and apply the same guard to
both the normal and fill_only paths.

Test the Earth settings interaction in a browser.

This test registers ae-set directly with a mock hide callback. Its focus assertions still pass if _aeBindControls stops registering the real panel. Add a browser test that opens the settings panel, focuses a radio, presses Escape, and checks focus on the gear.

As per path instructions, “Prefer a real server, a real ZIM fixture or a real browser over mocks for anything the user touches.”

From CodeRabbit's second pass: _flush_timings called from exit or a test
left the armed Timer to fire up to 15 s later; the Almanac's x closed a
panel without giving focus back to the button that opened it.

The key was already a single safe name; the path helpers now also
resolve the path and refuse one outside its folder, and a name in a
log line is quoted. Raised by CodeQL on the new settings file.

The CodeRabbit fix dropped every cached /catalog?zim= listing on
keep-changed, which fires as a library finishes downloading: the listing
it was just kept with went, and the kept library read empty offline
(test_keep_pdf_live). Each listing is now fetched again and replaced
only by a fresh answer; offline it stays.
