donatj/README.md

Hello!

I am a PHP, Go and TypeScript developer based in Minneapolis.

I work across the entire stack, but I’m happiest in the backend. Moving data, pushing bytes around, making things fast.

I ❤️ tiny reusable parts with single responsibilities and no side effects. I keep code simple, clear, and easy for anyone to read.

I’ve spent fifteen years in EdTech keeping old systems running and new ones from catching fire. Before that I built industrial and B2B tools where things had to work because people depended on them.

What I've been up to recently

I’ve been deep in Shielded.dev, building out API-managed shield badges with bearer-token support, user token management, and a Preact dashboard. It’s been a satisfying mix of backend work, schema changes, and frontend cleanup in a larger shield and dashboard overhaul.

I’ve also been contributing to GitHub Actions, improving setup-node so it can read a Node version directly from a JavaScript action’s action.yml metadata. I’ve been thinking a lot about keeping software simple and understandable, and about pairing AI-assisted development with careful review, testing, and sensible guardrails.

What I have been thinking about

I’m increasingly convinced that most software benefits more from straightforward data flows and small, focused tools than from layers of client-side complexity. AI can help move quickly, but I still want to understand the code I ship and preserve the human judgment that makes software dependable.
