Split Python CUDA tests into three independent GPU jobs, with directory-based, mutually exclusive coverage:
pt_expt-model: source/tests/pt_expt/model
pt_expt-other: source/tests/pt_expt, excluding model
other: source/tests, excluding pt_expt
All retain the existing Paddle exclusion, CUDA/dependency installation, FP64 check, environment variables, and timeout.
Run the C++ main chain and Kokkos on separate GPU runners using a second matrix with shared setup. The main chain retains model conversion/generation, CTest, ordinary LAMMPS, and i-PI. Kokkos independently builds its C API/backend installation and matching LAMMPS source, generates the required long-range models, and runs the original native-spin and long-range Kokkos regressions. Both retain the MPI and default CUDA dtype checks.
test_cc_local.sh gains --build-only and --models-only=kokkos. Build-only installs the custom operator before exiting. Kokkos-only generation requires CUDA, PyTorch, the installed C API, and the matching custom operator; it cleans only its own fixtures. The no-argument behavior still builds, generates all models, and runs CTest.
Both matrices disable fail-fast. The existing aggregate gate requires all five GPU jobs when CUDA testing is requested and preserves intentional skips otherwise.
Validation
31 focused tests passed: 13 new shell-orchestration regressions and 18 existing CI-splitting tests. The new tests execute the shell script with mocked compiler/model-generation commands and a real custom-operator file copy. They do not compile CUDA.
The new tests against the previous script produced 9 expected failures and 4 passes.
Default-mode command traces match the previous script for CUDA/CPU/ROCm, each with PyTorch enabled and disabled.
Pytest path-discovery comparison: 649 test files = 39 + 85 + 525, with no omissions or duplicates, including the new regression file. This is file-level discovery without backend imports, not complete parametrized GPU-node collection.
Structural checks confirm unchanged Python setup, shared C++ checks, the projected main C++ chain, Kokkos test commands/required guards, and aggregate conditions. All 32 aggregate success/failure/skip/cancel combinations passed against the actual alls-green implementation.
The prior two-Python-shard revision completed CUDA successfully in about 3h50m. The new three-shard plus independent-Kokkos layout still requires its own GPU run. No new-layout speedup is claimed; wall time depends on GPU runner concurrency and duplicated preparation cost.
Summary by CodeRabbit
CI
CUDA Python tests run across three shards, while C++ tests run in separate main and Kokkos suites.
CUDA runs require the applicable Python and C++ jobs to complete; jobs may be skipped when CUDA testing is not requested.
Testing
Local test workflows now support build-only and Kokkos-only model-generation modes, with checks for required configuration and build artifacts.
Added coverage for local workflow modes, argument validation, fixture handling, and error reporting.

The CUDA workflow now runs Python tests in three shards and C++ tests in main and Kokkos suites. The local test script supports build-only and Kokkos-only model-generation modes, with Linux-only tests covering those modes and the default workflow.

Summary
CUDA CI test matrices .github/workflows/test_cuda.yml
The Python job runs model, other experimental, and remaining test-suite shards. The C++ job runs main and kokkos suites, with suite-specific steps and updated skip rules for the pass job.
Local build and model-generation modes source/install/test_cc_local.sh, source/install/test_lammps_kokkos.sh
The local script accepts all, build-only, and Kokkos-only modes. Kokkos-only mode validates prerequisites and generates long-range DPA4C fixtures. The LAMMPS script comment describes the supported workflows and reused fixtures.
Local mode validation source/tests/test_cc_local.py
Linux-only tests use command stubs to check build commands, fixture generation, prerequisites, failure handling, and invalid arguments.
The CUDA workflow split and local Kokkos modes have no established merge-blocking defects. Additional assertions would strengthen regression coverage; GPU execution and timing improvements remain unverified.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "ci: shard CUDA tests and isolate Kokkos" names the two main changes in the changeset. The workflow now runs three non-fail-fast CUDA Python shards and a main/kokkos C++ matrix. The test_cc_local.sh script gains a Kokkos-only mode, and the new Linux tests cover it. The title is concise, uses a conventional commit prefix, and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history. It does not cover the script and test changes, which is expected. Note that the PR objectives describe a two-shard split (pt_expt and other) with an unchanged C++ job, while the raw summary describes three Python shards and a main/kokkos C++ matrix. The title matches the raw summary's changes, so the mismatch does not make the title unrelated.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 7 functions across 3 files. The default-mode tests check only the success path. No test makes the stubbed ctest return nonzero. The script already propagates CTest's status, because set -ex is set and ctest --output-on-failure is its last command. A future change that ignores that status would still pass this suite.

Review comment at @source/tests/test_cc_local.py around lines 142 - 143:
Add a default-mode test using run_script with the ctest stub configured to fail;
assert the script returns a nonzero status and that ctest was the final command.
Keep the existing successful-path assertions unchanged.
Assert the generator directory in the model-selection test.
generated_models keeps only each generator basename, and the python stub never opens the generator path. A script change that runs gen_*.py from the wrong directory would still pass these assertions. Add an assertion that each generator runs from source/tests/infer.

Review comment at @source/tests/test_cc_local.py at line 126:
Update the model-selection test using generated_models(commands) to verify that
every non-`-c` Python generator command runs from the resolved
`source/tests/infer` directory, in addition to checking the generated model
names.
Assert the build and install commands in the build-only test.
The build-only test does not check the cmake --build or cmake --install calls. A build-only run that skipped either call would still pass its assertions. The test name also states that it checks installation. Add assertions for the recorded build and install invocations after the configure check. The indices hold for both ENABLE_PYTORCH parameter cases, because configure, build, and install run before the op-copy step.

Update the build-only test around its existing `commands` assertions to verify
