I was not able to reproduce my issue on a freshly setup and up-to-date server with the latest version of Multiverse plugins with no other plugins and with no kinds of other server or client mods.

Description
Sometimes, probably related to inventory updates, the error log appears, mentioning only Multiverse Inventories.

Just playing on the server

Not giving any error in console

@ujex256 You may want to report this to paper mc. I think its related to their 1.21.5 change

After it occurred once, it has not reoccurred with the same player.

I'm concerned about the empty inventory.

I would like to report it if I can confirm that it is reproducible, but I'm not sure what the conditions for it to occur are.

I've heard this is deprecated and apparently people have been warned not to use it for a long time because ItemMeta serialization is not versioned and does not DFU properly.

This is most likely due to the changes with how Minecraft serializes data between different version, which Bukkit's ConfigSerialization does not migrate very well between the different data formats. To solve this, paper has completely changed how ConfigSerialization is handled in 1.21.5 PaperMC/Paper#12363. However, this only fixes future issues and for 1.21.5 servers.

With v5, Multiverse-Inventories has a different way of solving this issue, by using byte serialization instead which is available on paper since 1.18. You can enable it in config.yml, setting use-byte-serialization-for-inventory-data to true. This is prevent any future errors, but will not fix any inventory data if it's already broken or wrongly formatted due to the old Bukkit's ConfigSerialization.

The only way to "restore" the data is if you have a full backup of your mvinv playerdata on the older Minecraft version it was originally saved from. You can try the following:

• Create a server running that older minecraft version
• Ensure you are using v5 of all relevant multiverse plugins
• Set use-byte-serialization-for-inventory-data to true in config.yml
• Run /mvinv bulkedit playerprofile migrate inventory-serialisation nbt, if you face some "xxx was created from a newer version of minecraft" means your data have already been serialized on a newer minecraft version and probably can't be saved unfortunately.

The above steps should also be applied before you upgrade your server to a newer minecraft version to prevent the format issues, even if you may be be facing any current issues with inventories serialization.

By the way, if I've already updated and don't have a backup of the previous version, is there a way to protect the inventory of players who haven't yet joined the server?

It’s probably going to be quite difficult, you could copy only those player’s minv data to an older minecraft server instance, and so the steps I detailed above. That’s only if you know who the specific players are.
