replace dynamically evaluated link-checker arguments with a SHA-256-verified lychee binary invoked through a quoted argument array
read changed Markdown paths as NUL-delimited Git output so spaces, quotes, and shell syntax remain literal filenames
restrict the workflow token to read-only contents access and disable persisted checkout credentials
add regression coverage for special-character filenames and the original lychee options

Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Link validation runs on added, modified, and type-changed Markdown files, including filenames with spaces or special characters.
Link-check results are included in the workflow summary when available.
Bug Fixes
The link-check job now reports failures when file discovery fails or when broken links are found. If no Markdown files match, the job completes successfully.

Walkthrough
The workflow installs a checksum-verified Lychee v0.11.1 archive and checks changed Markdown files through a new shell wrapper. New tests check workflow configuration, path handling, summary output, and exit-code propagation.
Changes: Link Check Execution
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Checker wrapper and argument handling hack/check-links.sh, scripts/test-link-fail-fast-workflow.py
The wrapper exits successfully when called without paths. Otherwise, it escapes selected glob metacharacters and runs Lychee with configured options. Tests check paths with spaces, quotes, shell syntax, and glob characters, along with summary output and exit-code propagation.
Workflow setup and changed-file invocation .github/workflows/link-fail-fast.yaml, scripts/test-link-fail-fast-workflow.py
The workflow sets read-only contents permission, disables checkout credential persistence, installs Lychee v0.11.1 after checksum verification, and discovers added, modified, and type-changed Markdown files with NUL-delimited paths. It exits successfully when no files match and invokes the wrapper when files are found. Tests check these workflow settings and discovery behavior.

The remaining risks are bounded: unrelated pull requests can fail during an unnecessary Lychee download, and special-character filename handling still needs version-specific confirmation. Merge with owner awareness or address these concerns first.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "ci: validate changed link paths safely" matches the main change. The PR makes the link-check workflow handle changed Markdown paths safely: NUL-delimited Git output, a quoted argument array, and escaping of glob metacharacters in hack/check-links.sh. The title is concise, follows a conventional-commit style, and a teammate scanning history would understand the primary change. It does not mention the SHA-256-verified lychee binary or the read-only token, but it does not need to cover every detail.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the required "What is changed, added, or deleted?" section with four specific bullets. It also lists validation commands and fills in the "Which TiDB Operator version(s)" checklist with main checked. The "What is the related PR or file link(s)?" section is filled in with N/A for both fields. The first-time contributor checklist from the template is omitted, which is acceptable because it applies only to first-time contributors. The description was written for a different repository's template, but it still matches this repository's template structure.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 2 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Add type-change paths to the changed-file filter.
The AM filter drops T (type change) entries. A Markdown file that changes from symlink to regular file under zh/ or en/ is not checked. Add T to the filter and update the matching regression assertion.

hack/check-links.sh:19-20 Minor · Potential issue · Poor tradeoff
The wrapper forwards literal Git filenames as lychee input arguments. If lychee v0.11.1 interprets those arguments as glob patterns, quoting them for the shell does not preserve filenames containing glob metacharacters.
Lychee may skip the changed file or check a different file, despite receiving the intended argument.
This can occur when: A changed file is named en/[draft].md or contains another glob metacharacter.

Update the argument forwarding in the check-links.sh wrapper so changed
filenames reach lychee as literal paths, even when they contain glob
metacharacters. Use a mechanism supported by the lychee version in use, and
verify it checks the exact supplied filename without interpreting its characters
as a pattern.

test around the required strings so it verifies that `git diff-tree` writes its
output to a temporary file and the step fails if that command fails before
`mapfile` reads the list. Do not rely on matching the `git diff-tree` command
substring alone, which also passes when its failure is masked.

🔵 Needs a closer look
The workflow downloads and executes a third-party release binary, so validating the legacy archive contents and runtime behavior requires human supply-chain review beyond this static check.

What changed in this PR
This PR hardens the documentation link-check workflow by safely handling changed Markdown paths, verifying the lychee binary, and restricting workflow permissions.
Changes:
Downloads and SHA-256 verifies a pinned lychee binary.
Preserves special-character filenames using NUL-delimited Git output and quoted Bash arrays.
Disables persisted checkout credentials and restricts token permissions.
Adds regression coverage for filename and argument handling.
A moderate issue remains in .github/workflows/link-fail-fast.yaml: failure of git diff-tree inside process substitution can be masked, causing the job to succeed without checking links. The Git output should be written through a normal redirection before mapfile reads it.

Description
scripts/test-link-fail-fast-workflow.py
Tests workflow safeguards and preservation of special-character filenames and lychee arguments.
hack/check-links.sh
Provides a safely quoted lychee wrapper with the expected options.
.github/workflows/link-fail-fast.yaml
Installs the verified binary, discovers changed files safely, and runs the link checker with restricted permissions.

Before this PR, lychee was downloaded only when a PR changed lines with links. This PR adds unnecessary CI overhead and could cause unrelated PRs to fail if the download fails.
Could we check for changed Markdown files first, and only install and run lychee when needed?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 0a7d1f51. Changed Markdown discovery now runs immediately after checkout and writes only a constant has_files boolean to $GITHUB_OUTPUT; the NUL-delimited path list remains in $RUNNER_TEMP. Both lychee installation and link checking are skipped when no matching files changed, while Git discovery failures still fail the job.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Before this PR, the lychee-action automatically generated a GitHub Actions Job Summary (see pingcap/docs#24604), but this implementation removes that functionality, making link-check results harder to review.
Could we preserve the summary by writing the lychee Markdown report to $GITHUB_STEP_SUMMARY?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 8842ac2e. The wrapper now tees the Markdown report to $GITHUB_STEP_SUMMARY while retaining console output. Because the script uses set -o pipefail, a failing lychee invocation still returns its original non-zero status; the regression test covers both the summary content and exit code.
