HyperHDR with hyperserialesp32 - Working with Full 4K HDR VRR and ALLM
#139
I've been doodling around a bit with hyperhdr since I got a new TV and seeing as it supports 144hz in 4k HDR I thought I might as well use it to it's fullest potential. T
Setup is:
300 LED (BTK SK-6812 COLD) strip - $30
Right angle strip connectors. These are awesome, saved an hour trying to solder 4 corners with a TV hanging on the wall... Or worse taking it off again then re hanging it. $5
BTK Power supply - 5v x 30amp - bit overkill but it was $5 difference from 20amp - $12
MHET Live 2.0 and 1.0 wemos d1 mini with I02 set for data - $3
recommended level shifter for 3.3 - 5v - $1
PCB wired to level shifter and female pin headers for the wemos d1 - $3
hyperserialesp32 v7 flashed to wemos. Higher versions did not work with hyperdr 18,19 & 21
Aliexpress "True 8K matrix - 4 input x 2 output - 8K VRR HDR support" with automatic down scaler for output port connected to grabber - $100
Total cost for equipment to get HyperHDR running: ~$350 AUD
Inputs to the matrix are:
Intel NUC i5 Tigerlake with IRIS GPU. This also runs HyperHDR installed from tarball. Libraries were need to be copied across from hyperhdr v18 and linked.
Any nuc or rpi or whatever would work
XBOX Series X - Resolution set to 4K 120hz HDR VRR
Play Station 5 - Soon to test
PC - - Resolution set to 4K 120hz HDR VRR
Output from Matrix are:
To S90H
Direct to grabber. This supports pass through but would've cost more and would of needed a different splitter.
AV setup is controlled by a logitech harmony hub(supports ali express matrix when added as FEINTECH. It's exactly the same) - Means I ca n press 1 button to control it all and switch matrix outputs accordingly.
Harmony hub and automations are controlled by home assistant elsewhere.
Total time to set up all hardware and configure software:
3 hours
(I have done it 3 times before though)
Reason I posted this was because I couldn't really find a reasonable solution to achieve this without spending around $1K AUD which was definitely over budget.
There is one caveat the matrix specified only supports ARC. which is 5.1 audio. There is a passthrough option but again the unit only supports arc. I have it running fine with ARC as this TV is connected to an older HTIAB and doesn't support more than dolby 5.1 and DTS audio. I have a toslink cable but didn't end up using it as ARC unexpectedly worked through the matrix when it's forced to 5.1 audio
Would recommend looking for a newer matrix that supports EARC, if you have an amp that can output Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Atmos , DTSH-HD etc.
This room is setup like this as ARC is needed.
The other room has basically the same except everything plugs into a Denon receiver and the output to the TV goes through a splitter rather than a matrix. I haven't tested it but the ezcap364(GameDock Extreme 2.1) has passthrough and if your setup is going through a receiver you may even be able to eliminate the splitter. Thereby reducing costs further.
The main take away is the aliexpress matrix and importantly the ezcap364.
Hope that helps someone.
I can dig up the links to the items above, if anyone is interested.
