Simple OS 1.0.5 is out

[FreakySneaky787]

Hi everyone,

Simple OS 1.0.5 is being prepared. It is not out yet. It is planned for Sunday, October 18, 2026, once the last tests are done. Here is what is already known to be in it.

It is a bugfix release with a few small new features and a new ISO. If you run Simple OS 1.0 to 1.0.4, you will get it through Software Updates, so there is no need to reinstall. The first time you sign in after the update, a short "What's new" window shows the highlights.

Easier to find your way

• Clearer menus. The right-click menu is sorted into Apps, Settings, Tools and Help. Every entry under Settings opens the matching page of the Control Center.
• The Control Center has more, smaller pages. Keyboard, Date & Time, Notifications, Printers & Scanners, Storage & Backups, Password & Security and System & Updates each get their own page instead of one long "System" page.
• Tidier app search: duplicate and technical entries are gone.

New

• Default apps (Default apps page (browser, PDF, mail …) #38): choose which app opens web links, emails, PDFs, pictures, music, videos and text files.
• Startup apps (Startup apps page #39): switch off apps that start by themselves when you sign in (Steam, Discord …), or add one.
• Battery level of Bluetooth headphones (Bluetooth: show the battery level of headphones #37) in the Control Center and the Bluetooth menu.
• A calendar (Calendar: clicking the clock shows a month #45): click the clock in the taskbar.
• Windows and Simple OS on one computer (Dual-boot polish: Windows fast startup and RTC #46): the clock no longer jumps by an hour or more after you used Windows, and there is help if you can't change files on your Windows drive.
• "What's new" window after updates (Show "What's new" after an update #65).

Fixed

• Signing out and in again: the power button works on the login screen again, and automatic night light, the day/night wallpaper and update messages keep working without a restart.
• Installing: the installer's own partitions no longer show up as "USB drive is ready" with a "Safely remove" button while it installs.
• Updates reach your menu: the new menu also arrives on systems where an earlier update had to keep the old one.
• Search and app menu with a Swiss, German or French keyboard: Y and Z (or A and Q) are no longer swapped when you open them by tapping the Super key.
• Wi-Fi country follows the time zone you set in Date & Time.

The full release notes will come with the release.

Testing and feedback

Thanks to everyone who tested 1.0.4, especially on older PCs and dual-boot setups! If you found a problem in 1.0.4, please report it now, so the fix can still go into 1.0.5:

• On Simple OS: Menu → Help → Report a Problem.
• Or use the bug report form: https://github.com/FreakySneaky787/Simple-OS/issues/new/choose

Questions go here in Discussions under Q&A, ideas under Ideas. The roadmap shows what comes after 1.0.5.
